Cárdenas Guillén offered Guzmán Decena and his fellow commandos astronomical pay—often ten to twenty times their military salaries—along with luxury safe houses and brand-new tactical gear. In the late 1990s, Guzmán Decena deserted the army, taking over thirty elite commandos with him. Among them was Heriberto Lazcano (Z-3, "El Lazca"), an operative known for cold, tactical lethality. They took the radio code name for federal police commanders—"Zeta"—and dubbed themselves Los Zetas. The Zetas transformed Mexican drug trafficking from gang brawls into modern asymmetric warfare: Military Tactics: They operated in squads, fireteams, and platoons, deploying Barrett .50-caliber anti-material rifles, RPGs, belt-fed machine guns, and body armor. Psychological Warfare: They brought military psy-ops directly to the streets. The Zetas were the first cartel to systematically use public beheadings, stringing bodies from highway bridges, and filming execution videos to freeze local populations and rival cartels in absolute terror. Their reliance on pure terror, however, proved unsustainable: Unlike the discreet, corporate-minded cartels that built political alliances, the Zetas brought down the full tactical fury of the Mexican Navy Marines (SEMAR) and US intelligence. In October 2012, Marines cornered and killed supreme commander Heriberto Lazcano (Z-3) in Coahuila—only for armed gunmen to steal his corpse from a funeral home hours later. In July 2013, Marines ambushed and captured his successor, Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales (Z-40), in an intercept near Nuevo Laredo.
