🚨 New Publication Alert! 🚨 Our first paper of the year is out in Ophthalmology @AAOjournal! We analyzed 1351 eyes with geographic atrophy (GA) from AREDS & AREDS2 over 4 years to uncover key drivers of BCVA decline: 🔹 Baseline BCVA 🔹 GA proximity to the foveal center 🔹 GA growth rate We also developed a 3-step approach to stratify 4-year BCVA loss risk & identify who may benefit most from current/future treatment—a step forward in GA care & clinical trial design! Grateful to my mentors & collaborators for their support! 📖 Read more: aaojournal.org/article/S0161… #Ophthalmology #GeographicAtrophy #VisionResearch #BCVA #MedicalResearch

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve matched into my first-choice vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Duke! The first photo was taken 10 years ago, when I was an undergraduate at Duke assisting with intraoperative OCT that we developed and observing Dr. Cynthia Toth teach retina fellows in the OR. That's when I knew I wanted to become a VR surgeon and a scientist like her. The second photo is from today, during Dr. Toth’s visit to UCSF. She delivered a named lecture on intraoperative OCT and her career journey. This moment truly brings things full circle, and I can’t wait to begin my VR fellowship at Duke! I'm so grateful to my amazing mentors along the way!

#AAO2024: In eyes with #GeographicAtrophy (GA), the amount of sharp vision a patient loses may depend on closeness of the lesion to #FovealCenter, level of baseline #BestCorrectedVisualAcuity (BCVA), and pace of GA growth. @aao_ophth Presented by @LinusShenMD. Excited to present a paper at #AAO2024 this Sunday. I’ll be sharing our findings on key factors contributing to visual acuity decline in patients with GA, and discussing which patients may benefit their visual acuity most from therapies that slow GA progression. @aao_ophth

Our latest review @AnnualReviews, led by @DrNoraLad, delves into functional and anatomical endpoints in #GeographicAtrophy clinical trials, explores the gap between structural and functional outcomes, and highlights key prognostic factors. We also provide recommendations for improving future trial designs. #VisionScience #AMD Read more: annualreviews.org/content/jo…

Our latest study @AAOjournal shows that increased baseline hyperautofluorescent signals (rim area focal hyperautofluorescence) is linked to faster geographic atrophy progression, particularly in small to medium-sized lesions. #AAO #Ophthalmology #GA ophthalmologyscience.org/art…

The National Eye Institute is crucial for eye health innovation. @HouseCommerce must keep NEI independent to continue its work for patients. We urge Congress to boost NEI funding and improve vision health for Americans. ow.ly/EtI850T7VmW #EyeCareAdvocacy

In collaboration with @MariyaMoosajee, we used BETR method to study ellipsoid zone width in #USH2A. We found EZ width declines exponentially, and the log-transformed rate required 48% fewer patients for a 1-year trial (38 vs 73). @bmj_latest #RP #MedTwitter
Thanks to our very clever statistical colleagues we have been able to #BETR understand disease progression of the ellipsoid zone in patients with #USH2A #RP #UsherSyndrome 👉🏼 bjo.bmj.com/content/bjophtha…… @BMJ_Ophth @CUREUsher

I've always wanted to find a better way to carry everything in my multi-lens case. So I designed and 3D printed an insert to hold all my lenses, a scleral depressor, and a lens cloth in a @VolkOptical case. Below is the link to my model. #ophthalmology #MedTwitter

I am extremely sad to hear that my mentor and role model, Professor Joseph Izatt, passed away yesterday. He is a giant in engineering and ophthalmology, and has inspired countless of trainees. It’s such a tragedy to the field. today.duke.edu/2024/04/duke-…
