My legal pals back in the Tar Heel State…anyone have connections to triangle-area criminal lawyers who could review a post-Alford plea case? DM me if possible.
And no, it’s not for anyone who’s ever been followed by a documentary crew, seriously.
I had the opportunity to use my “Venti-sized rat” testimony story yesterday and I giggle every time.

My presence on this platform is ridiculously sporadic these days, but hello to my @LoyolaLaw folks (@smbrnsn et al) — show up to 7 pm Mass next academic year and you’ll have the pleasure of my hymn choices and piano skills. #AMDG

Pocket people, if you’re up for it, share a time you messed up.
Few things are a better antidote to imposter syndrome than hearing how others made mistakes—and lived to tell the tale.
I’ll start. Several years ago, I was an associate on a huge case. Both sides had hired some of the biggest and best firms around the country.
The joint defense group was divvying up motions in limine and discussing MIL strategy.
I emailed the JDG to bounce a strategy idea around. Or so I thought. What I actually did was email the PLAINTIFF’S listserv, copying the JDG.
My career flashed before my eyes. What had I done?! I gave away the farm, and I did it publicly in front of some of the most reputable lawyers in the world (including several heavy hitters at my own firm).
Of course, that wasn’t what happened. It was a small item and one the other side was going to consent to anyway.
Tail between my legs, I apologized to the JDG for my mistake. They responded with grace and commiseration. Several far more experienced folks shared their own stories of bigger screw ups. It helped—a lot.
My takeaway? Screw ups are inevitable. Own them and fix them. If you do, it’ll probably be fine. We’ve all been there before. And most of us will support you through honest mistakes.
Grammy, Saint Thomas More, handcrafted highland cow from my sister, and true words of encouragement 🩷
Nearing month-end of 3rd month of tracked billables and I won’t hit my target. I’m SO anxious that when our office manager emailed re: scheduling my website headshot I felt it was an incredibly soothing balm to my insecurity. HOW can I tolerate this severe imposter syndrome?
my thoughts on music (the nerd and egoist in me feels compelled to inform you that I could’ve had a triple major *adding music to my philosophy and poli sci degrees* but the administration did not allow that )
Anyway, music is powerful.
Wild Saturday night babysitting plans (yes, I am a practicing lawyer) — honestly, I’ve been looking forward to this for weeks.
TBH the motivation for these activities was so I can give my psychiatrist a positive report re: my weekend, but that’s a start, right? (at least this manifestation of my people pleasing tendency boosts my wellbeing 🙃)
Filled my social quota by bowling with @PeterOrlowicz and @mreno79 last night, recharging with some solo time despite the temptation to open up some work files and bill a bit. (I know there will be plenty of Sundays where I’ll have to log on and work, so I’m putting myself first)

I left my desk for lunch (aka hopped across the river to pick up RXs from Walgreens) for the first time in forever and it was SO restorative.
Tips for a newbie biller whose first month at the firm was also their first month of the billing year? (meaning many non-billable things)
Quite pleased that at yesterday's firm meeting, we were encouraged to review @illinoiscourts's latest 17 opinions & orders and to get to reading, writing, and researching to publish articles in our practice area(s).
It's like school! but getting paid for it! I'm in nerd heaven.
I billed .2 hours today for “Examine 21 photos from XX of XX regarding the condition and temperature of subject meatballs upon delivery for the purposes of developing an initial case evaluation.”
‘Twas the night before my first billable year. Good luck and Godspeed to me. (p.s. changed jobs last month and now working in cargo law)
Committing NOW to start strong tomorrow so as to not cry when November 2024 rolls around bc I didn’t hit my target.

Heads up, Windy City! 🚗💨 Possible road closures in the Loop for PM rush hour due to Federal Plaza gathering at 4:30pm. Plan a detour! #ChicagoTraffic
It’s Rail Safety Week!
Every 3 hours in the US, a person or vehicle is hit by a train. More than 2100 people are killed or injured each year in North America in crossing & trespassing incidents.
Thanks for the swag, @Metra.
