Trump claims that the Tren de Aragua gang will not only swallow up Aurora, it will gobble up the whole state of Colorado. This story by Sentinel reporter Susan Greene helped me to understand the history of the Aurora Venezuelan gang hysterics. #copolitics sentinelcolorado.com/metro/c…

#TBThursday This cartoon from September 1994 ran in several newspapers. We know that the human cost of three-strikes enhancements has been immense, felt disproportionately by communities of color, and the financial cost to taxpayers has been astronomical.

Never fails.
Source on this story: I really want to read it, but it keeps blocking me with the advertisement for The Times! How do you get around that?

My story on today’s front page
Someone stole William Woods’ identity. The LAPD arrested him, believing the identity thief over him.
A judge later sent Woods to a mental hospital because he maintained (rightfully so) that he was the real William Woods. I interviewed him here

Killer whales might be a lot more complicated than you thought. Fascinating story by @lila_seidman. I did this sketch 11 years ago (for some reason.) At that time, I thought if you've seen one orca, you've seen 'em all. latimes.com/environment/stor…

Here's one that I did on July 25, 2016. I thought that Trump wanted to be a dictator almost eight years ago.

Go read my latest — which is easily the craziest story I’ve ever reported:
A Sherman Oaks house was raided, looted in plain sight. What happened to its owner was worse

Beyond stunned to find out that my book is a finalist for the California Book Award, one of the highest literary honors in the nation. And WOW to be cited alongside such a brilliant cohort of writers, by such an esteemed panel of judges…somebody pinch me! commonwealthclub.org/events/…

Hire this guy, @jservantez . He exceptional.
I was laid off from the LA Times this morning with over 100 of my colleagues, the hard-working people who made this place great. It’s a blow to local journalism, Los Angeles and the West.
Meantime, I’m open to editing work. 📧: first dot last at gmail

If we care about our democracy, we’ve got to care about working journalists. Most aren’t paid a fabulous salary. Most scrape by paycheck to paycheck. Our communities have a right to trustworthy news.
Layoffs at Time, Pitchfork, Condé Nast, Sports Illustrated and the Los Angeles Times are threatening our democracy. "It's time for all of us to stand up and fight FOR America's journalists" @gaufre

They all hurt, but this one ... @francineorr is the heart of this place. She has an almost supernatural level of empathy and care toward every person she photographs. One of the people the L.A. Times simply can't function without. Today is a fiasco.
Oh my. @francineorr , one of the most sensitive, talented photographers ever to work at the @latimes , a @PulitzerPrizes finalist with the compassionate eye of Dorothea Lange, has been laid off. This was her latest feature. Somebody, hire this woman. latimes.com/world-nation/sto…

I’ve been laid off from the @latimes. It’s been an honor to work at the paper for nearly a decade, launching a video game beat, helping to win Pulitzers, covering diverse communities. To my colleagues, @latguild, readers: Thank you.
