Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty has issued this statement in response to the execution of Jesse Guardado.
"Tonight, this administration has reinforced its legacy of refusing mercy regardless of a personโs remorse, culpability, or transformation, while resisting any oversight of its own actions. Just hours before Jesseโs execution, the governor of California commuted the death sentences of all 548 people in his state, demonstrating that a governor can protect public safety while allowing them to live. Floridaโs next administration will have the opportunity โ and the responsibility โ to reconsider how this state uses its power over life and death. Let Jesse Guardadoโs transformation in the years after his devastating crime inspire that change." fadp.org/statement-on-the-exโฆ @FADPorg @FLDeathPenalty @uscedp #deathpenalty

Small memorials like this - parish churches, cricket clubs, schools - are, I think, among the most moving. A reminder of the cost of the Great War to the 'little platoons'.

As we approach Remembrance Sunday, it is only right to remember those that gave their lives in all wars and those who have and still are serving. The Falklands has a long history of our people serving in the British forces, the earliest that I have found is around 1899/1900 when Ernest Phillips and Singleton Bonner were reported in our old papers as being in South Africa as part of the Boer war. Present day sees Falkland Islanders in all services and thank each and every one of them for their service. This is an interesting write up on just one of them ๐ซ๐ฐ
BORN IN THE SHADOW OF WAR
THE INSPIRING STORY OF WO1 SARA HALFORD
Long before she wore the uniform with pride, Warrant Officer Class 1 Sara Halfordโs life was shaped by history itself.
Born in the Falkland Islands just three months before Argentinian forces invaded the British overseas territory in April 1982, Saraโs earliest years were bound to a land that would soon witness fierce conflict. Growing up in the capital of Port Stanley, she and her friends spent their childhood playing on Mount Tumbledown, running across the very terrain that, on June 14, 1982, became the scene of one of the most critical battles before the enemyโs surrender.
Having seen firsthand what it meant for British servicemen to cross oceans, risk everything, and stand strong to liberate her home, Sara felt an immense, lifelong debt of gratitude towards those who fought for her freedom. At just 17 years old, she made a life-altering choice and enlisted in the British Army.
Today, as a senior Warrant Officer serving with 16 Medical Regiment in Colchester, WO1 Halford carries forward that legacy of service and dedication. For her and the people of the Falklands, the efforts made by the Crown's forces are never forgotten, they are honored every single day.
An extraordinary story of loyalty, deep-rooted gratitude, and absolute devotion to duty.
Lest We Forget.
