Reminder that GPUs can do software rendering (and can do it much faster than CPUs). Just don't use the fixed-function parts!
(Not to pick on the the author of this post, and I always appreciate a Quake mention.)

Today the second edition of Mastering Graphics Programming with Vulkan is out in the wild!
We did our best to take the critiques from the first edition and improve.
I really hope will help people understanding more and more rendering and have fun with it!

i am really fascinated by the tech but i genuinely like to drive (car, motorcycle, bicycle everything) and can't imagine why would anyone consider it a chore? Its understandable for public transport (FSD buses will be dope), or maybe for persons with disability but otherwise not
I remember the discourse about amd, that it can only compete in the mid end cards. Now it's not true since 5080 is like half the card 5090, and rx 9070xt is pretty close to 5080. They are almost even in the top end with no 5090. Might be the worst way to achieve parity xd

I was honored to be invited by Prof. George Em Karniadakis to speak at the CRUNCH Group at Brown University.
I presented my work on connecting shadowgraph imaging, topology, and multiscale morphology in air-assisted atomization

Reading the comments of junior mathematicians confirms what many senior mathematicians have been warning about over the past month:
It is becoming clear that people with the intellectual ability to understand these proofs will not be interested in spending their lives training to check LLM logs.
This is the tragic side of what is happening that almost no one — except the actual mathematicians — seems to get.
Either we figure out how to keep people interested in doing mathematics, or in 20 years LLMs will have no one’s work left to recombine into new proofs, and no one interested in reading those proofs.
That would be the thermal death of mathematics.
The argument that “LLMs will read LLM math” is so shortsighted that it makes me want to cry…
you wouldnt believe me when i say, such is the state of indian oligarchs, i would actually prefer musk and hence US owning and "misusing" our data
not a math grad/researcher, but so accurate with the code as well. one shotted code reads trash. i always prefer to do it in simple parts, where every step can be debugged and verified and only then move to the next one

How can *anyone* stand to read AI-written math results? I truly don't get it, everything about them is so grating and *everything* is at the wrong level of abstraction: too detailed for non-experts, too hand-wavey for experts. Like there's no coherent audience or reader for it
every fucking time
wouldn't have been "shellshocked" if he was actually a full time researcher
i can bet they didnt read a single line in this load of bs
they dont even gaf about the correctness, its just a race to being the fastest, not the most accurate

Good abstractions work best when all backends are fundamentally doing the same job with the same constraints, but remain separate for non-technical reasons. This would include GPU APIs, OS memory allocation APIs, and window manager APIs. The details differ, but across platforms, they all serve similar technical purposes, which is why you can form a relatively clean abstraction over them.
The reason the cleanest APIs in SDL can exist is because the underlying things they are abstracting over are largely equivalent. The abstractions get weirder the more you change the implementation constraints. For example, a window manager abstraction works well across systems with similar window managers, but it becomes weirder if you use that same API on a game console with a single framebuffer and no notion of windows whatsoever.
This is also why, I suspect, LLMs are so good at porting. It’s ultimately an exercise in translation from one language to another, but ultimately mapping to the same thing. Usual disclaimer, that’s not useless, that’s not nothing, but it sure ain’t the same thing as “super intelligence”.
