Snyder: I visited the front in Ukraine. Things look pretty good. A Russian breakthrough seems pretty unlikely, and having to mobilize is a bad sign for Russia. Ukrainians gain more territory than they lose and inflict many times more casualties. 1/

One of my favourite Legolas moments in the book was how he brought down a flying mount of a Nazgûl with a single arrow, in the middle of the night, completely nonchalantly. While the Fellowship was travelling down the Anduin, Legolas spotted a dark, winged creature approaching from the south. Armed with the bow gifted to him by Galadriel, he fired into the night sky and sent the creature crashing down near the eastern shore. Legolas couldn’t even identify what he had shot. When Gimli praised his shot, Legolas responded merely that he didn’t even know what he had hit. It was only in The Two Towers that Gandalf revealed he had killed the winged steed of a Nazgûl. The Ringwraith itself had survived. This event may have completely altered events had that Ringwraith continued pursuing them. Frodo would soon put on the One Ring to escape Boromir, while Merry and Pippin would fall into the hands of Orcs. Imagine a Nazgûl overhead during either encounter. (Art by Ralph Damiani)

Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue comes alive in Yuja Wang’s dazzling hands—bold, elegant, and wonderfully free, with the unmistakable spirit of 1920s New York. 🎹💙✨

Trump is drawn to Putin like a moth to a flame. It was only a matter of time before he was manipulated into betraying Zelenskyy and Ukraine once again. Putin, a disastrous Russian president, plays him like a fiddle. Trump’s actions will stain the USA’s reputation for generations.

For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach. — J.R.R. Tolkien

Dolly Parton stories are my favourite @X subgenre right now. Literally all of them are fabulous. For most of us who never met her, it feels like you did. She was obviously one of those people whose public persona was the same as her private persona. Sunshine on legs.
Dolly Parton made the best chicken and dumplings I ever ate. On lunch break she would knock on my trailer door with melt-in-your-mouth dumplings, biscuits, gravy, green beans.Every day it was a southern feast. I had never seen an actor actually use the cooking facilities in their trailer before but she had it all going on. I still have Dolly’s Tupperware…

I’ve always loved the meaning Tolkien gave to the names of Narsil and Andúril. Each derives from Quenya. Narsil comes from NAR, meaning “fire,” and THIL, meaning “white light.” Tolkien explained that these represented the Sun and Moon, the great lights opposed to darkness. When the broken sword is reforged in Rivendell, Aragorn names it Andúril, “Flame of the West,” from andúnë (“sunset” or “west”) and ril(brilliance or glittering light). West accordingly refers to Númenor. (Via Tolkien Gateway) The films change this, Narsil isn’t reforged until The Return of the King, when Elrond presents it to a more reluctant Aragorn at Dunharrow as Andúril. This removes Aragorn naming the sword himself, which I believe adds more meaning. Narsil belonged to his ancestors and carried their history. Once reforged, Aragorn gives it a new name before carrying it into his own story.

The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater. — J.R.R. Tolkien
