Does your employer offer an ESPP (Employee Stock Purchase Program)?
If it does and you're not maxing it out, you're leaving money on the table.
How much?
That depends on how your ESPP is structured.
An employee stock purchase plan allows you to purchase company stock at a discount. Sometimes I've seen it be only 5%, but the maximum allowed is 15%.
Another critical difference between ESPP is when that discount is calculated.
The best version has a lookback that allows you to lock in a lower price if the value at the beginning of the offering period is lower than the price at the end of the period.
Here's an example: Jan 1st price of $20, July 1st price of $30. If you receive a 15% discount at $20, then the price you pay is $17 per share when it's valued at $30. That's a 76% rate of return.
Without the lookback, the discount is always priced at the ending value of the offering period. So same example as above, but the purchase price is $25.50 and the rate of return is 17.6% (notice it's actually better than 15%)
Stay tuned for details on the tax impacts of your ESPP, as this is long enough. 🤣

One of the biggest mistakes developers are making in the 2026 job market is confusing a finished project with proof of engineering ability.
Y'all need to understand something:
Nobody is hiring you because your portfolio has a cool application. They ARE hiring you because of the engineering conversations that application allows you to have.
Think about two candidates walking into an interview with the exact same AI-powered project.
- Candidate #1 explains what the application does, which AI tools they used, and shows off the features.
- Candidate #2 explains WHY they designed it the way they did. Where they used deterministic logic instead of AI. How they handle unreliable model outputs. What happens when the system fails. What tradeoffs they made and WHY.
Same exact project. Two completely different interviews.
One demonstrated that they could produce software.
The other demonstrated that they understood how to engineer it.
And this is why I keep pushing developers to understand the decisions they're generating with AI.
I don't really care if AI wrote 100% of your code. But if you can't explain the architectural decisions, defend your tradeoffs, or identify where things could go wrong, you've missed one of the biggest opportunities that project was supposed to give you.
AI lowered the barrier to building software. It did NOT lower the bar for understanding it and making the right decisions.
We got into this on the latest episode of The Programming Podcast because I think developers need to fundamentally rethink what they're trying to accomplish with portfolio projects.

HENRYs: High Earners, Not Rich Yet
It’s a common marketing category for people who earn a high income but haven’t yet built significant wealth.
Here’s why it matters to the people I work with.
High income doesn’t guarantee wealth.
Just because you earn enough to become wealthy doesn’t mean you will.
Your income gives you the opportunity. What you do with it determines the outcome.
Building wealth takes patience, discipline, and intentional decisions over time.
You may have financial mistakes to clean up, habits to change, or a lifestyle that’s consuming more of your income than you realize.
Left unchecked, a high income can fund an expensive lifestyle without ever creating financial freedom.
But with the right habits and strategy, that same income can become the foundation for lasting wealth.
HENRYs can end up financially trapped by the lifestyle their income supports or build the wealth that gives them freedom.
Same income, dramatically different outcomes.
The question is: Which path are you on?
