Nearly 130 years after Ameer Ben Ali's murder conviction, I discovered in a box in Albany's state archives this brass key that finally granted him freedom. It and other findings led to my new historical @audible_com drama "Takers Mad" audible.com/pd/Takers-Mad-Au…
Intrigued by @kevinroose’s revelation that Anthropic’s Daniela Amodei consulted a stuffed-animal advisory council on thorny work decisions? (Sorry, Claude...)
Then check out the trailer for the movie Holden Karnofsky made Daniela in lieu of an engagement ring back in 2016, starring their ragtag cast of stuffies.
“Mrs Snoopy the Vampire Snooper” is funny and thoroughly charming, if perhaps a little too prescient:
“With today’s sophisticated machine learning algorithms, we can learn things about you that you don’t know yourself, including whether you drink blood.”

During Holy Week, a priest visited a Ukrainian drone unit near Zaporizhzhia. He prayed with the combatants, then sprinkled holy water on a strike drone before it flew against Russian lines. It was St. Augustine's conundrum in its newest form.

A great read from @LukeJKummer and @keachhagey.
That's quite a trajectory for Dario Amodei's wife. As Traffic tells us in Dear Mr. Fantasy, "If it was a straight line you had, we wouldn't have known you all these years." Of course, we wouldn't have known her at all without such great reporting.
The internet has been so scrubbed of references to Dario Amodei’s wife, Cami Clark, that if you Google her, you get a picture of his sister instead. Not even Claude can say if he’s married.
But she has been an influential force in his career, introducing him to Eric Schmidt, one of Anthropic’s first investors, with whom she had previously been in a three-year relationship, and serving as a key sounding board and networker.
To get to this point, she overcame much: dropping out of college, a brief early marriage when she was 20 to a man more than 40 years her senior, a bankruptcy and an entrepreneurial path that included trying to get Jeffrey Epstein to invest in her “revolutionary porn company.”

Replying to @keachhagey
@keachhagey and I profile for @WSJ the most important person in the AI saga you’ve never heard of—Cami Clark, who's married to Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei.
Little has been made public about their relationship (even Claude didn’t seem to know...). But she’s the one who introduced Amodei to Eric Schmidt, whom she also dated. The former Google CEO then became one of the frontier lab’s first backers.
Before that, Clark was a serial entrepreneur whose businesses included a women-focused ‘revolutionary porn company’ that she pitched to Jeffrey Epstein, including sending him a film script and seeking investment.

Thanks, @LukeJKummer! I can't believe how lucky I am to get to work with someone of your talent. There is no one more dogged or creative.
THE OPTIMIST: Sam Altman, OpenAI & the Race to Invent the Future by @WSJ's @keachhagey lands 5/20. I was honored to help research as she wrote a modern epic & pried open the head of one of today's most consequential figures. Have a look—it's wild! a.co/d/fBWXfGO @wwnorton

Great chatting with @mcalderone @radhikajones and Claire Howorth of @VanityFair about Sam Altman and THE OPTIMIST, which comes out May 20.
We had a great conversation with @keachhagey about her new book on Sam Altman — his political views and ambitions, feuds and deals, and the future of AI

Sam Altman did not just explore a run for California governor. He told people he was also considering running for president.

Between a pandemic, moral panics and a trade war, it keeps getting easier to argue to young people that the past tends to repeat itself (or at least rhyme)

Less than a week before Sam Altman was fired from OpenAI, his mentor Peter Thiel gave him a warning over dinner: “the AI safety people” were going to “destroy” OpenAI. Altman, ever the optimist, shrugged it off.

Catch “Make Believe” – a new play written by @JohnBiguenet and directed by @suzannebarabas – at @NJRep before it closes on 3/9! @EilisCahill and Quentin Chisholm are brilliant in this smart, nostalgic and beautifully staged trip to Hollywood’s golden era!
When setting out to tell a story, it’s worth a whole lot to start out with an original idea.
