In 14 years at the BBC there are two or three people who, when you’ve worked with them, you think ‘wow, they are at a different level’. Mike is one of them. Best days I’ve had in media were working around him. An outstanding guy in every way.
It largely went under the radar that Mike Costello retired at the end of the Commonwealth Games, finishing his celebrated career covering amateur boxing and, typically enough, without wanting any of the attention he could have courted. He also spoke, in @BoxingNewsED
Nephew makes his @TheAnfieldWrap debut. Subscribers set to rocket.

A brilliant tribute to Kevin Keegan by Graeme Souness - when Kevin Keegan appeared at our 10th anniversary for a Q & A he point blank refused to take any fee or expenses as he said he was a big supporter of the work we do - what a player - what a man! #YNWA ♥️
'Spend a day with Kevin and you will see how a true, true superstar acts and behaves'
Former Liverpool and Newcastle manager Graeme Souness spoke to #BBCBreakfast about Kevin Keegan, who has died at the age of 75

I watched every game this man played and I’m still fucking awestruck at this.
The absolute level
Not been a single footballer on planet earth, before him or since, who could do everything that Steven Gerrard could.

Just found this from 2009. Called Kevin and he said: ‘I’m not really doing interviews at the moment, what would it be about?’
Told him it was to mark 50 years since Shankly’s appointment at LFC: ‘I’ll chat for as long as you want about that great man.’

Probably the best advert for football & beer in the world: recorded in Dagenham in 2005 this is the Carlsberg Old Lions advert including the talents of Alan Ball, Peter Beardsley, Terry Butcher, Bobby Charlton, Jack Charlton, Stuart Pearce, Peter Reid, Bryan Robson, Peter Shilton, Chris Waddle, and Des Walker, with Sir Bobby Robson as manager.

I thought that next year's London Marathon would be popular but the figures released this morning are pretty astonishing:
- A world record 1,338,544 people have applied for the 2027 London Marathon
- Over one million from the UK and 300,000 international applications
- Almost two percent of the entire UK adult population entered the ballot
- More than double the applications for the 2024 London Marathon (578,304)
- Almost 100k people from the US (92k) applied
- Highest number of UK applicants were women aged 20-29 (179k)
