finally someone else is saying it. the real world is not text. robotics is way more complex than LLMs

hell yea
Lula has been elected President of Brazil for a fourth term, defeating Jair Bolsonaro.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
President Lula's (Image 1) opponent in the runoff was Flavio Bolsonaro, son of Jair Bolsonaro (Image 2).

There's a new version of this post
incorrect my brownstone is sick and it’s for throwing parties
One of my hotter NYC takes is that brownstone living is wildly over-romanticized.
They’re expensive, drafty money pits with narrow layouts, endless stairs, and none of the conveniences of a doorman building. They only become less practical as you age or have kids.
I suspect what people actually want is to live on a beautiful, tree-lined street in a neighborhood they love. Brownstones just happen to be the predominant housing stock in those neighborhoods, and we’ve somehow conflated the appeal of the two.
The best thing about living in a brownstone is everything outside the brownstone.
If anyone wants to test this, we provide a critic signal from proprioceptive and video data @SquareHammerLab
In language models, turning a generative model into a critic is simple: pass in the output and prompt for a score. Robot policies can't do this - they output physical actions & there's no built-in vocabulary to predict scores.
So when it comes to RL on robot policies, we typically train a separate critic from sparse rewards - blind to everything the policy learned from the actions in the pretraining data.
We think this has it backwards - can a critic learn from those actions the way the policy does? (1/n)
what the industry thinks is hard in robotics: "grab this object and put it over there"
what's actually hard: "you grabbed two 10g bags at once and the camera didn't catch it 30% of the time, how do you avoid a human checking every single pick?"
hey @ChrisAvellone wanna find some PE friends with me to buy this IP?
I can finally talk about Mass Effect Universe.
Since Bioware closed I can now reveal that I was part of the Mass Effect Council, saw what BioWare was building, and provided feedback during development.
• Set 600+ years after the Reaper War
• You play as a customizable N7 agent
• Instead of being a walking gun rack, you're a cross between John Wick and James Bond
• Shepard's legacy preserved, regardless of your ending
• A galaxy divided into three major factions
• Humanity, Krogan, Batarians, and more allied together
• Council races forming their own alliance
• The Geth emerging as a third superpower
• A galactic Cold War instead of another Reaper style invasion with a shadowy adversary
• Geth-built megastructures
• Connections between the Milky Way and Andromeda
• Experimental technology implanted in you as a unique point of difference
• Hacking and manipulating the environment
• See through walls, identify systems, remotely trigger hazards and more
• Handcrafted missions like ME1-3
• But with Hitman-style freedom in how you complete them
• Brutal close-range executions
• Squadmates who can clash with each other
• Romance wasn't being sanitised
• Liara returns - now an incredibly powerful Asari Matriarch
From what I saw, BioWare was making Mass Effect for us, the fans, not for people who don't exist.
It looked incredible.
And now we may never get to play it.

If you've noticed a distinct dialect emerging in frontier AI models and struggled to understand what they're talking about, you're not crazy!
We turned to psycholinguistics to investigate what makes the writing style so weird, and why this might be happening

I have now lived long enough to see couchsurfing.com invented 4 times
What if we could make the SF's generosity accessible to more people?
Launching CrashCouch 🛋️: a community connecting newcomers to SF with locals willing to offer spare space or even a couch for a short stay. free & no plan to monetize. community & safety first.
i moved 5 times in my 1st year in SF. What got me thru was the generosity of ppl around me. SF is full of ppl genuinely willing to help if they see potentials within you. i want to make that generosity more accessible.
referral & invite only (for now). I prioritize women feeling comfortable to be included in the community.
whether you need a place to crash or have space to share in SF, welcome to join: crashcouch.xyz
