It somewhat pains me to say it but this is a brilliant painting by psy twombly. But all of its positive qualities are those that distinguish it from AbEx not align. Even its unintelligibility is intelligible, and it’s visually arresting. It’s actually historical in nature.
It doesn’t actually pain me to say it I enjoy see art I like even if made by person who make lot shit art. Also this painting is actually a more accurate depiction of the battle of issus than the altdorfer I think! And is one of few use cases where action painting justified!
Art can’t exist without art theory in the same way humans can’t exist without producing excrement. But being surrounded by shit is not conducive to good living, actually it’s prudential to flush it.
