The original barbie body was designed to look natural once clothes were put over it. At such a small scale, this is a necessity to avoid bulk. Modern barbie is a 1/1 shrunk down human body, with no modifications. So any fabric looks incredibly bulky and poorly made

Another thing about modern Barbie: every other doll line on the market has exaggerated proportions, so that’s not a fair criticism that Mattel should bend to. So much of the dynamic design is lost in the plank flatness of it all (see picture 4).
