Karamoja is rich in minerals, yet local communities remain disadvantaged by limited awareness of mineral values & the lack of standardised pricing. Government should establish fair, transparent pricing & educate local miners to limit exploitation by investors and middlemen.
**Happening Today:** @Makerere consultative meeting in Moroto District, Karamoja, on the review of geology curricula and development of industry-aligned short courses to bridge skills gaps in Uganda’s mineral sector. @giz_uganda

The Eastern region, particularly Busia, Namayingo & Tororo districts, is rich in mineral resources that remain underexplored due to a shortage of skilled personnel. Reviewing geology curricula & developing short courses will help bridge this skills gap & improve livelihoods.
Training in Health, Safety & Environment has emerged as a key priority @Makerere Eastern Region stakeholder consultation on geology curricula review, amid reports of health complications & fatalities among artisanal miners linked to inadequate knowledge of safe mining practices.
This morning we are privileged to kick-start our stakeholder consultation courtesy of @giz_uganda and proudly funded by @EUinUG . Amongst us this morning at small scale miners and artisanals along with district leadership snd policy makers. @Makerere @MakerereNews

Geology Curricula Review: “Our vision for the Mak-SDMU project goes beyond textbooks and lecture theatres. Success means turning Uganda’s vast mineral wealth into high-value, sustainable and dignified employment opportunities for Ugandan youth.” - Mr. Henry Mukasa @giz_uganda
Proposed courses under the Geology programme include Hydrogeology; Geoscientific Equipment and Techniques; Geospatial Data Analysis; Programming and Machine Learning; Mineral Processing; Gemology; and Geothermal and Renewable Energy Systems.
Geology Curricula Review: Preliminary findings indicate strong demand for enhanced training in mineral processing & beneficiation, remote sensing, exploration technologies, health, safety and environment (HSE), project feasibility studies, & entrepreneurship. @giz_uganda @EUinUG
As Makerere reviews its curriculum, stakeholders have cited critical gaps in areas such as mining & economic geology as well as mining law. They have also called for the inclusion of a course on business and governance and greater alignment of the programmes with the NDP IV.
