Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Arturo Salgado and the Sheriff’s Office Drone Program were each recognized with a Certificate of Excellence during the 37th Annual Totally Trauma Conference, held October 19–20, 2026, in Monterey, California.
The Bay Area Trauma Education Consortium presented the awards in recognition of their contributions to emergency response and trauma care. Sergeant Steve Nottingham joined Deputy Salgado to receive the certificates.
Deputy Salgado’s individual recognition stems from a December 20, 2025, incident involving an adult male experiencing a mental health crisis who sustained multiple life-threatening, self-inflicted injuries.
Deputy Salgado, an FAA-certified drone pilot, responded with other deputies and deployed a drone equipped with thermal imaging capabilities. After approximately 45 minutes of searching, Deputy Salgado located the injured man and directed responding deputies to his location. Deputies were then able to reach the man and move him to a waiting ambulance for emergency medical care.
Scott Weyland, a hospital nurse practitioner III, credited Deputy Salgado’s quick response, the use of the drone, and the combined efforts of responding deputies with saving the man’s life.
“We are extremely proud of Deputy Salgado and the personnel assigned to our Drone Program for receiving this recognition,” said Monterey County Sheriff Tina M. Nieto, “Their actions demonstrate the importance of training, teamwork, and dedication when responding to emergencies. I want to thank Deputy Salgado and all the responding deputies whose efforts helped save a life.”
