Today, a Swiss court convicted former Belarusian special forces officer Yury Harauski, a self-confessed member of Lukashenka’s murder squads, of abducting businessman Anatol Krasouski in 1999. Krasouski supported Belarus’s democratic opposition. He disappeared in Minsk alongside opposition politician Viktar Hanchar. For 27 years, their families have sought the truth about their fate. More than 30 enforced disappearances have been recorded under Lukashenka’s rule. Harauski testified that the orders came from Lukashenka himself. Those who gave the orders must face justice too. I am grateful to the relatives, lawyers and human rights defenders who refused to give up. Their persistence made this step towards justice possible. Today’s verdict sends a message to Lukashenka and other dictators that neither borders nor the passage of time can guarantee impunity. We will keep working until everyone responsible for these crimes is held accountable.
