I know legislators are examining the law around pursuit-related liability at present. They should look closely at this Victorian proposal: instagram.com/reel/Dd_Lc0Bxx… If someone refuses to stop for a Garda member, they are responsible for what happens next. The law must stop treating Gardaí, who are responding to criminal behaviour, as though they created the risk.

As the National Pay Talks approach, the GRA have called out Govt to demand a direct seat at the table to negotiate for their own members’ rights. We have the right NOT to remain silent anymore #GRARep #Paytalks #Localbargaining

I am the GRA representative referred to in yesterday’s statement. I welcome the withdrawal of the potential misconduct allegation, but I am bitterly disappointed that An Garda Síochána pursued it in the first place. I have spoken on many issues affecting members in the past. Elected representatives must be able to speak for members without fear that doing so will lead to misconduct proceedings. I will not be making any further comment on the matter.
A senior Garda Representative Association member will not face a misconduct investigation over comments he made to the media after an assesment on the matter has now been withdrawn, according to the association rte.ie/news/ireland/2026/092…

I agree with the sentiment that experienced retired Gardaí could help address pressure on the service, but it must ONLY be focused on Garda and Sergeant ranks, where the actual demand is. I am sure higher ranks may feel they could also add value, but that is NOT where the gap lies.I would also be sceptical that many former members would return on a “volunteer” basis. If used, it should be properly recognised and properly paid.

Remember this tweet? Well, its happened again. The 'revelation' (quarterly cso figures btw) Gardaí are earning €95,000 through allowances and overtime on the same day recruitment targets have been missed for a second consecutive year and frontline numbers continue to fall. thejournal.ie/garda-recruitm… xitter.cf/MFerris11/status/20415…

I wish to express my sincerest condolences to our colleagues in @ClevelandPolice to the bereaved families and friends of the officers who died in this devastating incident. This tragedy again highlights the grave dangers police officers face when confronted with reckless criminality and wrong-way driving. It must strengthen our resolve to support policing, hold offenders fully accountable and ensure public safety is at the centre of criminal-justice policy. Right now, thats not where we are.

Drew Harris served as Garda Commissioner from 2018 to 2025. Brought in because of his policing expertise from another jurisdiction. Seven years in which proper pursuit training could have been put in place just like it is in the psni. Instead, despite the issue being repeatedly raised, frontline Gardaí were left relying on vague policy language changes. Seven years lost.

Social media companies must be held to account. The sheer volume of content glorifying car theft and dangerously driving stolen vehicles on motorways is staggering. This only rewards criminality and encourages copycat behaviour with, as we have seen, potentially fatal consequences.

Garda management have literally created a stick to beat themselves with. They invented a paper‑based overtime ‘authorisation’ system with no clear policy or audit trail and now, when the C&AG asks for records, they can’t produce approvals in most tested cases, including hours that were never actually authorised.

A while back I warned that we were heading here. ( xitter.cf/mferris11/status/20567…) Multiple Gardaí in hospital after assaults, treated as if it’s just 'part of the job.' Its not. There are clearly people in society who think it’s acceptable to assault Gardaí (on or off duty). That has to change and the first place it must change is in the courts. Consistent, serious consequences for violence against Gardaí. Surely theres a limit to continuous suspended sentences and revolving door 'justice'?

Yet again a member in DMR West is injured by an e‑scooter, this division is being hit disproportionately and I have been warning about this for far too long. Graces Law is only the start. We need proper pursuit training (we are NOT trained), a clear tactical framework and legislative indemnity for members on the ground. NOW. The time for empty platitudes about ‘standing behind members’ and routine condemnation is over. We need action. The @Pcsa_ire is, by law, supposed to hold Garda management to account. This is their latest agenda. There’s not a single mention of policing the EU Presidency, no focus on the current Garda recruitment campaign and nothing on whether the organisation actually has the capacity to meet demand. Instead, we’re back to a Crowe report that has been largely debunked and a homicide review that has been rolling on for nearly a decade. Accountability isn’t a one‑way street. If frontline members are under the microscope, the system that plans, resources and oversees them should be too. pcsaireland.ie/meeting/polic…

Has anyone actually assessed whether Garda powers are needed for this security operation in dublin castle? The Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland was clear that roles not requiring Garda powers should be freed up so guards can do real policing. Instead, busy stations in the DMR West are being drained of members and the pressure is piled back onto those left behind to carry the load. Same old story it seems.
Over 100 gardaí removed from Garda stations & from investigations to police EU presidency. They are robbing Peter to pay Paul because they won’t employ enough Gardaí. Victims of crime, how do you feel if your investigation is dropped as a result? irishmirror.ie/news/irish-ne…

On the face of it, these figures look positive, more women applying, more diversity and 40% of candidates aged 30 or over. But HUGE worries remain. We ARE failing to attract young people to build a sustainable service, and are relying on older career‑changers to plug gaps in a system that’s burning younger members out! If the average age of entry keeps creeping up, who is going to be paying into the pension pot and medical aid long enough to sustain it for everyone else?
Replying to @VirginMediaNews
The competition also saw strong interest from over-30s, who made up 40% of applicants, alongside continued growth in diversity across the intake. [2/2] #VMNews

These are exceptionally serious matters and they demand real expertise and operational experience from those tasked with dealing with them. Lived experiences from survivors matter. The ‘significant powers of Gardaí’ adage is often used as justification for ever‑expanding oversight structures, but in 2026 the focus now needs to shift to 'When and How' those powers are used not just they exist and whether oversight is proportionate to that actual reality. The risk of disproportionate oversight is real and if the balance is wrong, it undermines both frontline confidence and, consequently, effective policing. fiosru.ie/news-and-publicati…

Cases like this highlight, yet again, how far our bail system is from being genuinely risk‑based. When individuals with a history of serious violence can move in and out of bail with such ease, the public and frontline Gardaí are left carrying all the risk. The time to introduce proper bail‑monitoring tools including electronic tagging and much tighter supervision of high‑risk offenders is now.

Thoughts with my PSNI colleagues after yet another incident where a vehicle is used as a weapon against police. Incidents like this are happening far too often. Is violence against police becoming an epidemic? It is at least encouraging to see such a serious response in the form of an attempted murder arrest, charging and being brought swiftly before the courts.
