“Reading comprehension is NOT a skill that you can transfer from one passage to another passage. There are skill components but it’s relying on the knowledge you have to begin with and the effort you put into what you are reading.” ~Dr. Hugh Catts This article on #ReadingComprehension is one of the best articles I’ve ever read on this topic! Dr.Hugh Catts explains why we’ve been teaching reading comprehension all wrong all these years! To set teachers straight on how reading comprehension SHOULD versus should NOT be taught, I am sharing this article with my teacher candidates at @trentusoe this week so they are prepared and confident to teach their own students how to comprehend the texts they read! @AFTHigherEd @AFTOregon @CattsHugh Link: aft.org/ae/winter2021-2022/c…

“How do we begin to create an ecosystem in 6-12 for reading instruction like we have in K-2…. even as practice begins to shift, there are many older students who won’t benefit from policy changes mostly targeted at grades K-5.” “Let’s just be honest. We are still sending cohorts of kids to middle and high school who have been denied access to literacy in their K-5 environment….” 🎤 The truth is hard to hear. We have failed our students miserably, denying them the right to read and passing them to the next grade when they’re not ready. Time does NOT help a non-reader, it only widens the gap. Another fantastic @educationweek article by @s_e_schwartz. @EdWeekTeacher

“…upper elementary and middle school teachers estimate that 44% of their students frequently struggle to read materials for class… teachers said they need more resources to identify and support students with reading problems.” This is a must-read article for teachers who are struggling to teach middle and high school students who did not receive science-based reading instruction and cannot read in high school. @The74 the74million.org/article/new…

Western Carolina is completely devastated with flooding, power outages, downed trees, bridges collapsed, & over 400 roads closed People are stuck Roy Cooper hasn’t given a address in almost 24 hours. And now he seems to be handing responsibility over to the feds. Such a lack of leadership in a time of need Please pray for the people of Western NC

📸 I-40 washout near Tennessee state line. We cannot say this enough: DO NOT TRAVEL IN OR TO WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. Travel in this area for non-emergency purposes is hindering needed emergency response. Details on the restricted travel area ➡️ DriveNC.gov.
