If there was a Mount Rushmore of ball writers, Ross Newhan would be on it. He was a giant in the biz, a Hall-of-Famer who spent much of his 43-year career covering @MLB for the LA Times. He was a mentor to myself and so many others, a friend to all. Ross died today at 89. RIP💔

James Escarcega: "I am totally devastated by the news of the passing of Matt Luderer. I was informed of his health last year and chose not to report it. Matt was a great Athletic Director at Crespi and St. Francis. He hired great coaches, including Jon Mack, Russell White, Dean Herrington, Todd Wolfson, and many others. His impact will be felt for a good long time. He loved ND Football and the Yankees. He'll be reunited with the great Vin Scully in heaven. He was only 54! RIP my friend. Some hard tears tonight"

Very sorry to report that St. Francis athletic director Matt Luderer has died after a long bout with brain cancer. He was 54. He came to St. Francis in 2013 after being AD at Crespi. Always a good guy. RIP.

Only 2 people in sports TV make me laugh the way I laughed at this Barkley Spears Unreal TV
I mean, just an all-time TV segment. Making Chuck do Who He Play For multiple times in a row with the same players is a brilliant idea and I was legit crying laughing by the end, my god.

Lauren Hill signed to play college basketball. Forty nine days later, doctors told her she had an inoperable brain tumor. The kind that usually shows up in kids between 5 and 10 years old. So her college moved its first game up two weeks, and 10,000 people came to watch her make one layup. Here is the whole thing. She grew up in Indiana and played at Lawrenceburg High School. She signed with Mount St. Joseph, a small school in Cincinnati. Then came the diagnosis. DIPG, a tumor in the brain stem. There is no cure, and she knew it. The season did not start until the middle of November, and nobody knew how long she had. Her coach, Dan Benjamin, went to the NCAA and asked if the Mount St. Joseph Lions could play their opener early. The NCAA said yes. The game against the Hiram Terriers moved up 13 days. The school's own gym held about 2,000 people. So many wanted to come that they moved it across town to Xavier's arena. About 10,000 showed up. Early in the game, Lauren got the ball near the basket and laid it in. The place came apart. Here is how she described it. "It was so thrilling to get there and be able to put my foot down and just feel the roar of the crowd." She played in four games that season. She made five layups. Then she put all of that attention to work. She teamed up with a foundation called The Cure Starts Now and started something called Layups for Lauren. People everywhere filmed themselves shooting layups and donated to research for the cancer that was taking her life. A telethon in Cincinnati raised a million dollars for the cause. Here is what she wanted. "I want to be remembered as a hero for little kids to look up to." Here is the honest part. None of it stopped the tumor. Her family moved her to hospice care that December. Lauren passed away that April. She was 19. Her mother, Lisa, said this about her. "I don't know how she does it, but I believe a lot of kids are speaking through her." That winter, her school gave her an honorary doctorate. Her conference named her first team all-conference, and the commissioner explained why. "This award is being presented to Lauren in recognition of her courage and outstanding leadership." Her parents accepted an ESPY for her that summer. The NCAA gave her its Inspiration Award. Mount St. Joseph retired her number, 22. By 2023, the fund in her name had raised more than $2 million for research into the cancer that took her. She got one layup in front of 10,000 people. She turned it into something that is still paying for research today. For more stories like this, follow us on any platform @thesportsontap
