A milestone for @IFC_org and our partnership with Somalia. Proud to announce IFC’s first investment in the country, backing KIMS Microfinance to expand Sharia-compliant financing for entrepreneurs and small businesses. More capital. More opportunity. More jobs.

Great discussion on driving Africa's next chapter of growth. Key priorities: 🔹 Mobilizing domestic pension & institutional funds 🔹 Accelerating regional energy integration 🔹 Boosting local pharma & vaccine manufacturing Look forward to delivering on this together!
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, received and held wide-ranging discussions with H.E. Makhtar Diop, Managing Director of @IFC_org of the @WorldBankGroup on deepening the strategic partnership between Africa and the World Bank in advancing the continent’s development priorities. They discussed mobilising African capital, including funds managed by African pension and institutional funds, to invest more actively in African infrastructure, industries and transformative projects. The Chairperson @ymahmoudali underscored the importance of accelerating intra-African trade and addressing persistent barriers to integration, including inadequate infrastructure, non-tariff barriers, regulatory fragmentation and constraints to the free movement of goods, capital and energy. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening Africa’s pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing capacity through the African Medicines Agency, harmonisation of regulatory standards and the creation of reliable continental markets for African-produced health products. The meeting also highlighted the importance of Mission 300, regional energy markets and power pools, private-sector investment in transmission infrastructure, and the development of integrated transport, energy and financial corridors. The Chairperson further stressed the need to accelerate the digital transformation of the African Union and to strengthen peace, security and political stability as essential foundations for investment and sustainable development. The Chairperson & the IFC Managing Director reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration in support of an Africa that is more integrated, self-reliant, digitally connected and capable of financing its own development. Delighted to meet the @flyethiopian team, led by CEO Mesfin Tasew. We discussed Ethiopia’s growing role as a regional aviation and logistics hub. Integrated air, road and rail infrastructure can strengthen logistics, tourism, services and industry, helping Ethiopia attract investment, compete globally and create jobs far beyond aviation.

Today, I oversaw the signing of a landmark Framework for Cooperation between the National Bank of Ethiopia and the IFC to establish our country’s first dedicated Mortgage Refinance Company. Capitalized at 100 Billion ETB, with the IFC set to contribute a minimum of $200 million, this wholesale institution will resolve long-standing liquidity mismatches in our banking sector and unlock accessible mortgage financing across Ethiopia. This partnership is a critical step toward realizing our goal of delivering 1.5 million affordable, dignified homes for Ethiopian families while expanding private-sector participation in our financial system. Ethiopia continues to build a modern, resilient, and inclusive economy.

Sports infrastructure is economic infrastructure. Excited about the work ahead with Zaria Group looking at sports & entertainment districts across #Africa to unlock jobs, tourism and investment.
Very pleased to partner with Zaria Group, led by Masai Ujiri, co-founder of @GiantsOfAfrica, to help build a multi-country platform for sports and entertainment districts across #Africa. Sport is not only culture — it is also business, infrastructure, jobs, tourism, and opportunity. With greater private sector investment and professionalization, Africa can capture far more value from its sports and entertainment industries. Proud to see the @WorldBankGroup supports this vision. #ACF26
