The number of Aussies starting a uni degree is up.
The number of Aussies from disadvantaged backgrounds starting a uni degree is up even more.
My old uni @UNSW is helping. Their fantastic Gateway Program is helping more students from Western Sydney make it to UNSW and succeed when they get there.
I was at Plumpton High School in Western Sydney today where 28 Year 12 students are off to UNSW next year.

“In 2017, 17 per cent of Australian schools had more than half of their students in the lowest quartile of socio-educational advantage. By 2023, this had risen to 20 per cent – an additional 284 schools”

The ACT has signed on to an updated school funding and reform agreement.
This agreement will lift the Commonwealth’s investment in ACT public schools to 25 percent of the Schooling Resource Standard.
This investment will be tied to real practical reforms to help students catch up, keep up and finish school.
That means more individualised support for students, mandating evidence based teaching practices and more mental health support in schools.

Yesterday we signed a $4.8B deal to fix the funding of NSW public schools.
We’re investing in real practical reforms to help children get the best start in life.
It’s what every parent wants and what every child deserves.
“States and territories need to be smart in figuring out what would really transform schools so that they would make improvements in broader outcomes than just student test scores.”

“But while the extra funding is welcome news for NSW public schools, the results of the agreed reforms will not be felt for some time.”

More children are enrolled in early childhood education and care than ever before.
But many countries have seen a growing gap between enrolment of advantaged and disadvantaged children.
Why is this a problem?

"The Catholic and independent schools do an excellent job of advocating for their interests. I don't see the will, in either of the major political parties, to address, or even engage with reform."
