A year in, what are teens telling us about cell phone bans? New work from colleagues and me at Brookings. A few highlights:

This is why in the policy space everybody who wants schools to do something new ends up talking themselves into the position that actually you can just "integrate" it into what you're already doing and/or it "runs through everything we do", etc.
Replying to @PCSnow1604
That's why I think opportunity cost is the single most important idea in school improvement. Every hour our teachers—and our students—spend on one thing is an hour they don't have to spend on something else. And this matters most of all for students who find learning hardest...

"Findings suggest that Science of Reading-aligned reforms are associated with modest but gradually emerging improvements in reading achievement, with stronger effects observed at longer post-adoption periods."

Preliminary evidence suggests GLP-1 drugs may reduce cravings for addictive substances, but stronger evidence is needed to support broader access.
We @Arnold_Ventures are proud to fund the most rigorous study ever of effect of GLP-1s on alcohol/opioid use and downstream impacts.
Zurich is indeed awesome. But the shit that Los Angeles takes in these kinds of rankings is wild to me. Dallas and Miami are better than Los Angeles? That's insane, and if your ranking system produces that outcome you should throw it in the trash.

Apparently we really do need to do a better job teaching about this stuff in schools.
Asked how he defines socialism, @VP Vance says: "I don't know what the term means anymore. I think in reality, what it actually means in the American context is that you want to replace American workers with foreign workers, and you want boys to play in girls' sports."

This is a long one, folks: new CALDER working paper on the extent to which academic preparation predicts teacher workforce outcomes. We link college records from 3 WA public universities to who teaches, how effective they are, and who stays. 🧵 caldercenter.org/publication…... 1/11
Airbnb's entire rating scale is now 4.5 to 5.0
You can't make this up 😂
Airbnb deletes negative reviews so everything is always 4.7
Google Maps removes negative reviews in many countries as defamation so everything is always a 4.7
Booking sites want you to book so will also happily remove negative reviews for their hotels so everything is always a 4.7
I made a site called Hotelist.com (or HotelList.com whatever you prefer, I have both!)
It gets ratings from all booking platforms, normalizes them to show the actual score (eg a booking site where most hotels are always between 4 and 4.7 means you can normalize that to a 0 and 5)
It also uses AI vision models to rate hotels based on how they look
And it browses the internet for actual experiences (think blogs and Reddit posts) to get the real opinion about them outside reviews
And it's starting to work, I just stayed in this beautiful boutique apartment hotel called Woo Suites in Athens for $400/night. Clean, nice minimalist interior, working cold AC, central, excellent staff, great healthy breakfast, and we found it through Hotelist!
It's free, I don't make any money on it (actually I lose thousands per month on it to collect data via APIs and web scrapers) and there's no affiliate money bs like other booking sites (they will increase ranking of hotels if they pay sites a higher commission!)
Hotelist.com

Tough but fair, from @mattklewis. The GOP has abandoned traditional conservatism, leaving most such voters politically homeless.
"If you’re a conservative, it’s just really hard to come up with a credible reason why returning Trump’s enablers to Congress this November will help accomplish anything resembling conservative policies or values. All it will do is ensure Trump has zero accountability as he drives America into a financial ditch with one hand and crumples the Constitution with the other."
I guess I’m agreeing with [checks notes] … oh god.
No one likes changing the clock, me included, but Congress has enacted permanent Daylight Savings Time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter. Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I’ll always put Arkansas first.

we as a society certainly do, but it’s fascinating how gay men, in particular, have dodged this trend. adolescent isolation pushed so many millennial & Gen Z gay men to move to cities & establish found families. we’re more social than ever.
All of these statistics about the decline of socialization seem so foreign to me as a gay man. Everyone I know socializes constantly, both out and at home.
