Congratulations 🎉🍾🎊 So so proud to be working with the legends in this team with @AndreaCercek and @ldiaz1971 @MSKCancerCenter
🚨: The @FDA has granted accelerated approval to the immunotherapy Jemperli (dostarlimab) for adults with stage 2 or 3 rectal cancer whose tumors have specific genetic characteristics known as mismatch repair-deficient (MMRd) or microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H). The approach, developed at MSK by gastrointestinal medical oncologists Dr. Andrea Cercek (@AndreaCercek) and Dr. Luis Diaz Jr. (@ldiaz1971), uses immunotherapy alone to harness the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. This allows some patients to skip standard treatment for rectal cancer, which includes surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, and can have life-altering consequences for bowel and urinary function, as well as fertility. Specialists at MSK know how to modify tests and treatment protocols to navigate the special needs of people who have cancer during pregnancy. Beyond the medical expertise, MSK also offers emotional support for expectant mothers facing a heartbreaking circumstance. “We are seeing this situation more often because of the rise in certain cancers among younger people,” says MSK psychologist Dr. Amanda Balakirsky. “Being pregnant with cancer can cause a lot of grief and feelings of isolation. We try to normalize the experience as best we can, to help them adjust from what they were expecting in their pregnancy and feeling different from their peers.” Learn more about how they helped one patient and her now 1.5-year-old son: bit.ly/4engGNV

#Lungcancer, both small cell lung cancer (#SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (#NSCLC), is the second-most common cancer in the United States. "Lung adenocarcinoma, a type of NSCLC, is the most common type of lung cancer, and when caught at an early stage, it can be highly treatable. And for patients with stage one disease, surgery can often be curative," says Dr. David Jones (@JonesDavid2013), MSK's Chief of Thoracic Surgery. "If the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, additional treatment may be recommended to reduce the risk of recurrence." To name a few: 🔹 A persistent cough, including coughing up blood 🔹 Wheezing or shortness of breath 🔹 Chest pain 🔹 Hoarseness 🔹 Unexplained weight loss MSK thoracic oncologist Dr. Helena Yu also shares why lung cancer is more common in women than men in younger age groups and why people get lung cancer even if they’ve never smoked: bit.ly/4BjXKts

A new MSK study co-authored by MSK's @StadlerZsofia and Dr. Luis Diaz Jr., published in @CC_AACR, found that limiting genetic testing to patients under 50 would have missed 72% of those with inherited cancer mutations. Knowing about these mutations can help guide treatment and help family members understand their cancer risk. Learn more: bit.ly/4jTtgbf
