๐ฒ๐นโก The current energy crisis calls for decisive and united joint European action, that however ensures Member States have flexibility to address their energy realities and protect families and businesses.
๐ This was the key message delivered by Minister for Energy Miriam Dalli on Thursday (29 October), when #EU Ministers gathered in Luxembourg for the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy #TTE Council, focused on Energy. ๐ช๐บ
๐ Ministers discussed ways to make energy more affordable and competitive, strengthen the EUโs energy security ahead of winter 2026/27, and shape the post-2030 energy and climate framework.
๐ฒ๐น Malta stressed that European coordination and solidarity are essential to addressing potential energy supply disruptions and strengthening collective bargaining power.
โFaced with another energy crisis, we need a Europe that acts together. However, every country faces different challenges, and we cannot have a one-size-fits-all solution.โ โ Minister Dalli.
๐ฑ The post-2030 energy and #climate framework was another key item on the agenda.
Ministers discussed how future EU targets should be designed, particularly those relating to energy efficiency, electrification, electricity interconnections, flexibility and energy resilience.
Malta highlighted the need for a pragmatic framework that balances decarbonisation with affordability, competitiveness and security of supply.
โก For Malta, flexibility is particularly important to keep energy tariffs affordable for Maltese and Gozitan families and businesses, while strengthening the resilience of national energy infrastructure.

Thank you, @Lagarde, for your leadership and dedication as ECB President during exceptionally challenging times for Europe.
Your commitment to safeguarding stability has been deeply appreciated.
Wishing you every success in your future endeavours.
๐ฒ๐น Earlier this week EU Agriculture Ministers unanimously agreed on a partial negotiating position for a strong and future-oriented Common Agricultural Policy #CAP.
The draft CAP regulation is part of the negotiations on the EUโs next long-term budget, the multiannual financial framework (MFF).
This is a positive step forward for Malta, as it addresses many of the concerns raised by Malta to ensure that it reflects the unique needs and conditions of our farmers and agriculture sector.
During the discussions, which took place on Monday (26 Oct) at the Agriculture and Fisheries #AGRIFISH Council in Luxembourg, Malta was represented by Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Anton Refalo.
The Councilโs agreement is 'partial' because it does not cover financial and horizontal issues. These are currently being discussed as part of the negotiations on the overall Multiannual Financial Framework #MFF covering the period 2028 to 2034.
The agreement will enable Member States to negotiate with the European Parliament towards reaching a final agreement on the EUโs upcoming 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework.
๐ Ministers also discussed how the EUโs trade agreements can open up new export opportunities for European #agrifood products.
๐ Regarding Fisheries, Ministers agreed on fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea for 2027 and prepared for the annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas #ICCAT.
๐ฒ๐น Malta supported a science-based approach that safeguards existing quotas and #Mediterranean interests, while ensuring effective controls without unnecessary administrative burdens.

๐ฒ๐น๐ช๐บ What does it take to represent Malta at the EU negotiating table? And how can you build a career at the heart of Europe? ๐
๐ These were just some of the questions explored by a group of students from Savio College, who joined us last Wednesday (14 October) at Dar Malta for a behind-the-scenes look at Maltaโs Permanent Representation to the EU.
๐ค Welcomed by our Chef de Cabinet Joe Spiteri and our Spokesperson Nestor Laiviera, the students discovered how the Representation works, how EU decisions are shaped and how Maltaโs interests are represented in Brussels.
๐ผ Our Staffing Attachรฉ Matthew Borg also introduced the students to the many career opportunities available within the EU institutions, offering insights into the different pathways to working in European affairs.
๐ฃ๏ธ The students then had the opportunity to meet our Attachรฉs working on Defence (Rodianne Spiteri), Environment (Duncan Borg) and Financial Services (Tamara Chetcuti), hearing first-hand about their daily work, the issues currently being negotiated and what it takes to represent Malta at EU level.
๐ A big thank you to the students from Savio College for their curiosity, enthusiasm and engaging questions. We hope the visit offered a glimpse into the many opportunities to contribute to Maltaโs future in Europe. ๐ฒ๐น๐ช๐บ

Happy to start my two-day visit to Malta ๐ฒ๐น๐ช๐บ together with Commissioner @GlennMicallef meeting Prime Minister @RobertAbela_MT to discuss Europeโs priorities and how the next #EUbudget can help deliver them.
๐ฒ๐น๐ช๐บ The EUโs next long-term budget must protect the interests of Maltese and Gozitan citizens, support economic growth and recognise the realities of smaller Member States.
๐ This was a key message delivered by Maltaโs Prime Minister Robert Abela last week (15-16 Oct) at the European Council #EUCO in #Brussels, where EU Leaders discussed the 2028โ2034 EU budget #MFF, #competitiveness, energy, Ukraine, the Middle East, migration and enlargement.
๐ถ On the future EU budget, Prime Minister Abela called for strong #Cohesion Policy funding that allows all Member States to continue advancing, and argued that cohesion policy remains an important #competitiveness tool. He also called for concrete solutions for Maltaโs agriculture sector that reflects the sectorโs realities , while reiterating Maltaโs opposition to new EU taxes.
๐ค Ahead of the Summit, Dr Abela joined representatives of 16 other Member States that consider cohesion policy a priority. During the meeting, Member States agreed to call for an ambitious, balanced and fair budget that protects the interests of #citizens.
โก On #Energy, the Prime Minister highlighted Maltaโs particular challenges as an island, calling for flexible EU approaches that enable Member States to continue supporting households and businesses โ especially small and medium sized businesses - while also pursuing #climate objectives.
๐ On the #MiddleEast, Malta stressed the importance for the EU to continue working with international partners towards humanitarian access, respect for international law and a two-state solution, alongside stronger regional cooperation to safeguard #maritime routes, supply chains and #food security.
๐บ๐ฆ On #Ukraine, Dr Abela expressed concern over #Russiaโs attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, and condemned recent attacks on Maltese-flagged vessels, stressing that commercial shipping and civilian crews must never be targeted.
๐ก๏ธ On #Migration, Malta called for effective implementation of the EU Migration and Asylum Pact and welcomed the proposed European Emergency Response Framework that takes into account maritime borders challenges, and for stronger action against human smuggling networks, while calling for closer cooperation with third countries to increase effective returns and reduce irregular arrivals.
At the beginning of Day 2 of the EUCO, the Prime Minister also participated in a Leadersโ meeting focused on #migration, where closer cooperation on solutions to common challenges was discussed, in the presence of the European Commission.
๐ช๐บ On #Enlargement, Malta reaffirmed that progress towards EU membership must remain based on each candidate country's individual merits and achievements.

Maltaโs Minister for Social Policy and the Family, Michael Falzon noted the role of #AI in the development of quality #jobs, but warned that AI will never replace real #human understanding, compassion, or #empathy, all of which are fundamental to our society.
The Minister was speaking at the #Employment, #SocialPolicy, #Health and #Consumer Affairs Council #EPSCO on Monday 19 October in #Luxembourg.
Together with other EU Ministers, Minister Falzon tackled issues such as quality employment, equal #opportunities and #socialinclusion.
๐ผ A key topic was the forthcoming #QualityJobsAct, which aims to promote quality employment and a competitive, inclusive labour market, striking a balance among technological change and healthy workplaces.
๐ค Ministers also discussed how to turn opportunities into tangible improvements in peopleโs daily lives.
๐ฒ๐น Malta underlined that #equality is not only a social imperative, but also a driver of economic #growth and #competitiveness, ensuring everyone can participate fully in society and the #labour market.
๐ Ministers also reached agreement on measures to prevent #homelessness and inadequate #housing, with particular attention to vulnerable people and those at risk of social exclusion.
๐ฒ๐น During the Council, Minister Falzon stressed the importance of ensuring that support reaches those who need it most, underlining that โA competitive Europe must also be a social Europe.โ

Concluded two days of important discussions at the European Council in Brussels ๐ฒ๐น๐ช๐บ
From the next EU budget and competitiveness to energy, migration, Ukraine and the Middle East, Maltaโs position remains clear.
We need a fair and ambitious EU budget, stronger economic competitiveness and policies that recognise the realities of smaller Member States.
My priority remains safeguarding the interests of Maltese and Gozitan citizens, while ensuring that European decisions translate into tangible benefits for our country.
