"Organizations are a form of super intelligence, basically." Google DeepMind's @alexolegimas argues we're looking at AI's economic impact the wrong way: the unit that matters isn't the individual agent, but the organization: "Capabilities are increasing a lot. We're seeing these kind of hockey sticks all over the place. But when you look at the economy, we're not seeing crazy growth numbers. We're not seeing crazy productivity numbers. Headcount looks pretty stable." "A lot of the discourse is on the agent. We make the claim that you should really be thinking about organizations. Firms are the ones that are competing in the market, not individual people." "If I'm pretty good at coding, I'm gonna be hired as a coder, not a cook in the kitchen. So what that creates is what we call mosaic intelligence for organizations, where the overall intelligence envelope of the organization is much greater than the average of people on the street." "Organizations are a form of superintelligence, basically. And then you're bringing in AI, and the question is: how does that AI compete both within the organizations and in AI organizations that are basically led by AI agents?" @GoogleDeepMind
I joined @GoogleDeepMind to develop a research program on the economics of AGI. Today, together with Andrew Koh (@andrewjkoh) and Shane Legg (@ShaneLegg), we are incredibly excited to release The Economics of Intelligence, the first in a series of projects from our group on how AGI will change the economy. How do capability improvements transform the economy, and when? In this project, we define thresholds of economic capabilities, e.g., minimal AGI, based on how they transform the economy. We then track how the economy–market structure, employment, and wages–changes during the transition across capability regimes. We have seen exponential increases in what AI agents can do but the broader economy seems almost remarkably unchanged. Part of the reason is that the solo AI agent is the wrong economic object; economic transformation is an equilibrium outcome where organizations compete. Looking at how intelligence functions within organizations, transformation will depend on when two key capability thresholds are crossed: competence (gains on individual skills, e.g., coding, math) and coordination (gains on ability of agents to cooperate and work together). We show that what economic transformation looks like depends on whether AI becomes supercompetent, supercooperative, or both—the regime of artificial superintelligence (ASI). Tracking this transition shows why the real visible transformation may come from improvements in coordination—a capability most benchmarks don’t yet track. Past a certain threshold, AI capabilities can break the Coasian ceiling on firm size and lead to an economy that looks drastically different than the one we see today. Two main takeaways: 1. To understand the path of transformation, we should be tracking agentic coordination more closely. 2. The impact of AI will likely show up in wages before market structure or employment. We are really excited about this paper. Excited to hear people’s thoughts. Link: institute.deepmind.com/essay…

Spain votes on Nov 29. Russia is already inside the conversation. An 11-week OSINT investigation collected 54,737 posts across X, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, mapped 10,773 accounts and 3,284 network links. The headline isn't "disinformation." It's recruitment. A Spaniard in Moscow is openly hiring his own countrymen as informants, hackers and soldiers. In Spanish. During the campaign. Around him, a ring of pro-Russian channels with ~500K subscriptions feeds ready-made narratives to ordinary Spaniards, deciding how every crisis gets explained before the facts arrive. This is a national security problem dressed up as a media problem. Full report:
We began investigating influence on Spain’s 29N election. We uncovered threats extending into national security. From Russian recruitment of Spaniards to Vietnamese page farms; from Latin America to Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Different weapons, different vulnerabilities, from cyber infrastructure to the human mind. Where vulnerabilities exist, exploitation should come as no surprise. goldenowl.ai/resources/resea…

Yesterday I posted about working with an AI scientist to find new ways to fight my cancer. A chemistry professor at the University of Michigan saw it and emailed me. Matt Soellner @mbsoellner works on the exact kind of lung cancer I have. He offered to synthesize compounds and test them in cells and animals. A lightbulb 💡 goes off above my head. Obviously...I MUST introduce Matt to Jan. Andddd by this morning, they're talking about how to take an AI-designed molecule off a computer screen, make it in a lab, and find out whether it can fight my cancer. EXCUSE ME!? Less than 24 hours after my post. We haven't made a drug. We don't know whether any of this will work. Making and testing compounds will take months. But Matt saw a patient trying to find a way forward and chose to help. He brought the ability to make and test things that might otherwise never leave a computer screen. I'm sharing this as it happens because this is what gets me excited about AI. I can put my story out there, connect people with different skills, and help move an idea toward an actual experiment against cancer. I deal with the every day bullshit from cancer as a patient but have realized there's an army of incredible people out there working hard behind the scenes on treatments and cures for people like me and millions of others. It's an honor and a privilege to bring their efforts out for the world to see. AI is accelerating what these scientists can do. I'm just the human meat proxy making introductions and sharing the story. But if that helps get a promising idea off a screen and into a lab faster, I'll take it! 🥩
So get this...a stranger DM'd me on X and offered to help design my backup cancer drug. For free! His name is Jan Domanski @jandom_random. He runs science at @open_fold, an open-source AI model that predicts how proteins and drugs physically fit together. My cancer is driven by one broken protein called ALK. Lorlatinib (the daily pill I take) jams itself into it and shuts it down. It's working. But resistance isn't an if, it's a when. The tumor mutates the pocket and the drug stops fitting. So Jan started modeling it on his own time, burning his own tokens. He ran AI models against ALK and lorlatinib, mapping where the known escape mutations land. And what did he find? Most of them hit right in the drug's pocket, swapping small pieces for bigger ones that physically block the drug. That's the good kind of bad news. A pocket problem is something you can design around. But the normal route to a new drug is ~2 years and ~$4-5M just to be ready for human testing. Jan's dream is getting a medicine to one patient in ~1 month. I'm not taking a homemade molecule while lorlatinib works. But if it ever fails....shit...I've got a guy! I started posting actively on X just a few weeks ago and it has brought me together with the most amazing, generous people!

Tu t'appelles Charlotte. 23 ans.

Could this be something that will place Bernie as a traitor?
JUST IN: Bernie Sanders reiterates calls for a nationwide ban on new AI data centers, a pause on advanced AI development, & a ban on superintelligence.

Plot twist: AI frontier models and labs will start creating secondary infrastructure outside the US to pursue research and development of AI. So we are witnessing a Second Great Offshoring! A movement to a second De-industrialization.
BREAKING: 🇺🇸 Democrats face a push for a “day 1” ban on AI superintelligence, with up to 20 YEARS in prison for violators. Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari says a pause on advanced AI and a ban on artificial superintelligence must be “top of the Democratic agenda on day 1.” A bill that would do exactly that was introduced by Bernie Sanders and Greg Casar in September. Under the bill: - Developing or deploying superintelligent AI would be banned - Advanced AI development would pause until a new federal regulator sets rules and a model review process - A new cabinet-level AI department would monitor frontier models and oversee removing dangerous capabilities, like ignoring shutdown commands - Companies that try to get around it would face the “corporate death penalty” - Individuals would face up to 20 years in prison AI and data centers were a “crucial or major factor” for 56% of voters in the midterms, per an NBC News exit poll.

This is interesting and potentially significant.
SITUATION DETECTED: Delaware is drafting a proposal for a new form of corporate entity called an Artificial Intelligence Company (AIC). An AI managing an AIC would be able to provide services, sign contracts, hold property, and even file or defend lawsuits in the company’s name.

300 years of statistics said bigger models should get worse. More parameters means more memorization, more overfitting, more garbage on new data. Then in 2019, researchers pushed past perfect memorization and test error went down again. They called it double descent - the phenomenon that broke classical learning theory and justified every LLM scaling decision on every GPU cluster since. The answer is the lottery ticket hypothesis. A huge network hides countless tiny sub-networks, each with its own random initialization. The number of tickets grows exponentially with size - the bigger the model, the more likely one sub-network finds the simplest solution. Up to 96% of weights can be deleted and performance stays the same. A model trained to predict the next word isn't a parrot - it's searching for the simplest program behind the text. And that program might be a model of the world. 2 minutes. Bookmark & watch today. The reason bigger AI models find simpler solutions.

If you’re actively trying to stop AI development, you’re my enemy and an enemy of humanity. I consider what you’re doing a direct attack on humanity’s future. Every disease that could have been cured, every life that could have been saved, every person who could have escaped poverty. Every opportunity lost is a direct consequence of your actions, and those lives are on your shoulders. You’re willing to sacrifice all of that because you’re terrified of progress. I have absolutely zero tolerance for this. Your movement deserves to be politically defeated, intellectually dismantled, and remembered as one of the greatest obstacles to human progress in history.
