Last evening we had the priviledge and absolute honor of speaking with legendary High School and College Basketball Coach J.D. Mayo at length. We were especially interested in how his 'Work Ethic' was born, at the young age of 8 or so and still serves him well today and will serve his family for generations to come. J.D Mayo's work ethic was born at the age of 8, on a family Farm long before J.D. Mayo became a legendary high school basketball coach, commanding the sidelines and molding the character of young athletes, he was a boy on a farm. His days didn't start with a whistle, they started with the sun. Before the school bell rang, there were chores to be done. When the school day ended, the farm was waiting. At 13 years old, young J.D. had a goal. He wanted to buy a sharp suit, and the price tag was exactly $13 dollars. To a farm boy, $13 was a fortune, requiring hours of extra sweat and labor outside his usual duties. He put in the time, bent his back, and earned the money. When he proudly showed his earnings to his parents, they handed him a lesson that would alter the course of his entire life. 'J.D.,' his parents told him, ' $13 isn't yours to keep. You owe ten percent to the Lord first. His parents insisted that regardless of what he earned, the first dime of every dollar belonged to the church and to charity. If he wanted that $13 suit, he was going to have to work harder, sweat longer, and earn more to cover the 10 % tithe. It was a pivotal crossroads. J.D. didn't complain. He went back to work. In that moment on the farm, his work ethic and his faith became permanently welded together. He learned that money earned is a blessing from God, and honoring the Creator comes before personal desire. Coach Mayo carried that lesson with him still today and will for the rest of his life. Every dollar he ever made coaching and teaching, he willingly and joyfully gave his 10% back to the church first. The discipline his parents instilled in him at age 13 didn't just buy him a suit, it bought him a lifetime of favor, a foundational relationship with Jesus, and a legacy of integrity that he passed down to every player who ever stepped onto his court. True 'work ethic' doesn't just build wealth that builds a life that lasts for generations. Coach J.D. Mayo’s life story is one of the most compelling examples of how faith, humble beginnings, and an uncompromising work ethic can shape generations of young men. Retiring with over 800 career victories, Mayo remains the all-time winningest basketball coach in Dallas Independent School District (DISD) history, having won 698 games across 33 legendary years at Dallas Skyline High School. He was named the National High School Coach of the Year in 2000 and was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame. J.D. Mayo's journey from the farm to mentoring NBA stars and collaborating with icons like Zig Ziglar and John Wooden. Long before his name was etched in gold onto the gymnasium floor at Dallas Skyline High School, J.D. Mayo was a farm boy learning the law of the harvest. Over 33 seasons at Skyline, J.D. Mayo became the winningest coach in DISD history. He was what he called a 'double-goal coach'. Winning championships was the surface goal, but the true goal was molding boys into Christian men, responsible fathers, and pillars of their communities. His greatest test and triumph in mentorship was a raw, explosive talent named @TheOriginalLJ2 Long before Larry Johnson became the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft and a cultural phenomenon, he was a teenager on the unforgiving courts of South Dallas. J.D Mayo ran a program with the strict precision of a military unit and the love of a father. Johnson would later joke that he tried to quit Mayo's grueling practices dozens of times, only for his mother to send him right back into Coach Mayo’s hands. Mayo drilled the fundamentals into Johnson, refusing to let him rely purely on raw athleticism. READ: That 'blue collar work ethic,' propelled Johnson to a national title at UNLV, NBA stardom, and lifelong reverence for the coach who refused to let him take shortcuts. Coach Mayo was never satisfied with what he already knew, he sought wisdom from the greatest minds of his era. He studied and met with UCLA's legendary Coach John Wooden twice, mirroring Wooden’s philosophy that winning is merely a by product of self-discipline, character, and attention to detail (right down to Wooden’s famous lessons on sweeping the floor and tying shoelaces). J.D. Mayo's relationship with legendary motivational speaker Zig Ziglar revealed the sheer power of Coach Mayo’s sincerity. Early in his coaching career, Mayo listened to one of Ziglar’s audio tapes and was so deeply moved by the message that he cold called Ziglar's Dallas office. Ziglar’s secretary politely explained that Mr. Ziglar was booked years in advance, charged thousands of dollars, and was currently out of the country. J. D. Mayo humbly left his number and explained he only wanted someone to ignite a fire of 'work ethic and faith,' inside his players. A few weeks later, Mayo's home phone rang. It was Zig Ziglar himself. Struck by the high school coach's pure heart and devotion to his kids, Ziglar did the unthinkable, he completely waived his fee and used his rare day off to speak directly to Coach Mayo’s young athletes. Ziglar stood before those players, echoing the very principles Mayo lived by that honesty, body language, faith, and relentless work ethic and extra effort will open doors no talent can open alone. Coach J.D. Mayo retired with 808 career victories, but his real scoreboard is measured in eternities. The same boy who went back out to the fields to earn extra money for his tithe gave a lifetime of service back to his players. J.D. Mayo proved that when God instills a work ethic in a humble heart, that sweat doesn't just win ballgames, it alters the trajectory of families for generations. @60Minutes @jon_wertheim @ToddFuhrman @andrewssports @RoxyLasVegas @LastLivinLegend @wtfleagle @hawksfan327 @winlate @trobertstexas @JamesDu54984230 @marcomattthu8 @jhorsewhisperer @LindaDavid53416 @sellinnuthin
