The issue with looking at football plays in isolation is that it never considers a very important element of a fixed game: time.
If I am playing a team that has a better EPA than me, or insert whatever offensive stat, if I run the ball, I prevent them from being able to do the thing they are good at, by shrinking the game.
Everyone tries to compare football to poker, coin flips, etc. But the thing that I think that misses is that unlike those scenarios, in football, what I do impacts your ability to not do something else.
If your EPA is better than me, but you don’t get to run as many plays because I sit on the ball and fleece the clock - and that’s not accounted for, then something is missing in the discussion.

🇺🇸 In Virginia, a 64-year-old man was charged after he taped his wife to a chair in the basement so he could watch football upstairs.
Terry Ward was arrested last Sunday night in Richmond after officers responded to a domestic call.
According to the criminal complaint, his wife said he used tape to restrain her to a chair in the basement.
Ward admitted he tied her up and left her there.
She had marks and tape residue on both arms and told police she had been restrained for up to 45 minutes.
He faces felony abduction and misdemeanor assault on a family member
He is due in court on November 10.
