Part 1 :What kicked off this online showdown between Chinese and Turkish netizens?
This whole online skirmish started with a post shared on X by a Turkish user on October 16. A Turkish woman who advocates Pan‑Turkism met a Chinese Uyghur woman travelling in Türkiye and tried to persuade her to accept Pan‑Turkist beliefs. Her core point was simple: “Wow! We pronounce the word for ‘welcome’ the same way. How can you be Chinese?” The young woman refused firmly and stated clearly that she is Chinese. The Turkish woman then posted the exchange on X, seeking sympathy from the community. A Chinese netizen fired back using the exact same logic: “When you say aman/ɑːˈmɑːn/ (Oh my god), it sounds the same as ours in Greek. How can you be Turkish?” That reply stoked anger among many Turkish users. Angry? Seriously? Soon more Chinese netizens joined the fray. Sorry about that — in the middle of this skirmish, we accidentally hit Turkey’s flag, national anthem, and the Turkish president. My apologies, Mr. President. I know it’s not your fault. Is it your fault?
