Our recent work presents a 1-gram wireless mesoscope for cortex-wide imaging at single cell resolution in naturally behaving mice, published in @Nature . It's interesting to see large-scale neural activities in multiple mice within a very natural habitat. rdcu.be/iGFq4KbdWuza

1/14) Virtual animals are a long-standing goal in neuro-AI, but they should actually behave like real animals. We present SCAMPER: a virtual rat for RL studies that moves naturally during both exploration, and goal-directed behavior. Project page: aidansirbu.com/SCAMPER-site/

1/ We discovered something totally unexpected about the neural structure of consciousness that overturns decades of thinking on its biological basis and brings us significantly closer to the recipe for generating conscious awareness. Our paper is out in Nature, congrats to Qiyu, An et al! By stimulating ~20 motor cortex neurons carefully selected based on their activity, we could induce learned population activity and, sometimes, the movement itself, depending on the brain's state. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

So happy to see this work out! We studied when brain connectomes can be used to accurately predict neural activity, and when they can't. Happy to chat more about it, please do reach out if interested. nature.com/articles/s41593-0…

How does the brain balance learning new things without overwriting what it already knows? Our new paper tackles this long-standing stability–plasticity dilemma during active navigation. With @Adrinnenberg from the @KarlDeisseroth lab. (1/8) doi.org/10.1101/2025.10.21.6… @lisa_giocomo

Vaccines are not magic. None are perfect. Some work better than others. Some have serious and occasionally lethal side effects. We don’t understand the downsides of vaccines perfectly. Not everyone needs every vaccine. Some are pushed for profit. The regulatory system around them is flawed and sometimes corrupt. And still … VACCINES ARE ONE OF HUMANITIES GREATEST INVENTIONS.

ICYMI: Good news! The House rejected the proposed 40% NIH funding cut. The bill released has NIH funded at $48 billion, almost identical to the Senate’s number of $48.7 billion.

I'm Jewish. I got my PhD in neuroscience from Columbia in 2014. The biomedical research isn't even on the same campus as the protests. The Joint Task Force to Combat "anti-Semitism" will go down in infamy alongside HUAC. It makes me sick.
Today #NIH is terminating more than $250 million in funding—including more than 400 grants—to Columbia University following directives from the Trump Administration’s Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism. The cancellations are due to Columbia University’s continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students.
