Longtime @NPR correspondent, now doing my own thing. My AI policy: I use it for search, not analysis, and never to write.

Saw the movie last night. This article echoes my misgivings. It's a lot sound and fury for what boils down to a petty con on everybody (viewers included) by Fielder himself.

I join all my fellow Norskes in heaving a barely-audible sigh and going about my day.
WARNING: STRONG LANGUAGE President Trump escalated his invective against Norway, calling it a ‘shit house country’ and saying Norwegian immigrants are not welcome in the United States because the Nobel committee, based in the capital Oslo, has not awarded him a Peace Prize reut.rs/3U1joSt

At a regional opera performance yesterday the artistic director came out before the start to announce a new pledge of "No AI in anything we do" (posters and programs, I assume). Big ovation. It's a grey-hair opera crowd, I know, but people do seem increasingly annoyed by slop.

Was re-watching Silicon Valley last night and it suddenly dawned on me that there are characters named Gavin and Guilfoyle. That couldn't have been an accident.

The so-called first AI to "pass the video Turing test" just miserably failed each one of my extremely simple Turing tests.
Introducing Griffin, the first model to pass the video Turing test. 48% of people who talked to it live thought it was a real human. Previous systems have had a pass rate <3%. It is #1 on NVIDIA's benchmark for full-duplex AI video. It’s the first Human Interaction Model (HIM).
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The 48% figure and "video Turing test" claim are from Tavus's own study of 54 one-minute calls, not independently verified or using a standard protocol. Griffin-Lite leads NVIDIA's VideoFDB benchmark on their public leaderboard. cellcog.ai/blog/tavus-gri… research.nvidia.com/labs/amri/proj… tech-ish.com/2026/10/02/tav…

The first Sold a Story was crucial in fueling a huge push for the Science of Reading. Now season 2 is poised to do the same for Direct Instruction.

Just now finishing up an email to someone, and I realize I'd put an exclamation mark in the greeting, even though the recipient is a fellow Gen X-er. Turning that ! into a , Ahhh....

The AI "anthropomorphizing" debate is a distraction from the question of AI safety. Sentience is beside the point. Prove me wrong.

Remember: You don't have to let a merchant image-scan your driver's license. You're better off refusing and taking your business somewhere else. This includes rental car companies.
This type of breach, affecting 153 million individual's licenses, is going to have massive impacts on identity theft, specifically identity verification platform fraud (using front and back scans from this breach to "verify" as another person for financial services and more).

When it comes to spy agency directors, I'd like less Michael Scott and more Alec Guiness.

Has anyone seen a brand that advertises itself as AI-free (or some variant of "We're human-powered!" etc.)? For a story.

It’s remarkable how well the AI interviewers hold up to people’s attempts to gaslight them. This is a very funny one though 😂
