Happy All Souls Day All Souls' Day (2 November) is a day of prayer and remembrance for the souls of all the faithful departed, particularly those believed to be in Purgatory. It is the third day of Allhallowtide, following All Hallows' Eve (31 October) and All Saints' Day (1 November). In Catholic teaching, souls who die in God's grace but are not yet fully purified from venial sins undergo a process of cleansing before entering heaven. The faithful on earth can help these souls through prayers, almsgiving, and the sacrifice of the Mass. The feast expresses the doctrine of the Communion of Saints — the spiritual bond between the living, the dead in purgatory, and the saints in heaven. All Saints' Day honours those already in heaven; All Souls' Day prays for those still on their journey. The observance is attributed to St. Odilo of Cluny (c. 961–1049), abbot of the Benedictine monastery at Cluny in France, who around 998 AD ordered all monasteries under Cluny's authority to set aside 2 November for prayer, fasting, and Mass for the dead. The practice spread through the Cluniac network, then to other Benedictine houses, and became universal in the Western Church by the end of the 13th century.
