As we continue celebrating youth throughout this month, we recognize the impact young people can create when they are equipped with the right skills, confidence and opportunities.
Watch how Matilda Mashauri and her fellow @AGCCIAfrica_1 alumnae turned their digital training into lasting impact, co-founding @SHEWORKS_inTech and going on to train more than 120 women and girls, extending the opportunity they received to a new generation of young women in technology.

Strengthening Digital Africa: Tackling Misinformation through Local Content and Multilingualism
At the Africa IGF, PAYAIG hosted a insightful session addressing how misinformation, language barriers, and lack of localized content impact Africa’s digital space, elections, health (e.g., COVID-19), and social cohesion.
Key Points:
- The session highlighted how misinformation spreads quickly due to language barriers and limited localized content. Shared the example of creating the COVID-19 Resources website, which provided Swahili information during the pandemic.
- Pointed out the importance of creating content relevant to local contexts, cultures, and realities, emphasizing the role of local creators, journalists, and tech platforms.
- Our speakers stressed the need for digital platforms to support Africa’s linguistic diversity (over 2,000 languages) and promote local languages in fact-checking, education, and news.
Recommendations :
- We recommend empowering communities with media literacy programs tailored to local languages.
- Stakeholders have to invest in Africa’s digital infrastructure and cultural preservation through inclusive content creation.
- We recommend and support partnerships between governments, civil society, and tech platforms to fund local content.
- We advocate for tools to detect and moderate misinformation in local languages.
Speakers:
•Matilda Mashauri (PAYAIG Ambassador, Swahili Cohort 2024)
•Selby Abraham (PAYAIG Lead Facilitator)
•Godsway Kubi (Youth Ambassador, PAYAIG & Lead Facilitator, Internet Society Online Safety SIG)
•Millenium Anthony (PAYAIG Facilitator, Swahili Cohort 2023, Tanzania)
•Prisca Bessala (Pan African Youth Ambassador for Internet Governance)
•Noha (PAYAIG Facilitator, Arabic Cohort 2024, Egypt)
Moderator:Tabitha Wangechi (PAYAIG Facilitator, Swahili Cohort 2024, Kenya)
Together, we are building a multilingual, inclusive, and informed digital Africa!
