Arun Podwal, late husband of the legendary 1990s Hindi cinema singer, did not live to see the success of his first film album Meera ka Mohan, which made his wife Anuradha Podwal a playback superstar. He had composed for several Marathi films before this Hindi debut. He died at 47 from a massive heart attack a few months before the album’s release. As a great musician, he left one of the 1990s’ most popular albums, a lasting tribute to Hindi cinema music history. #VinylTalkies

Vinyl spinning and the magic of Kishore da continues with “Mere Samne Wali Khidki Mein” fills the room! ✨ What a song is this!!? Did you know the playful “creak-creak” sound in the prelude in this 1968 classic Padosan was created by Pancham using nothing but a plastic comb 🪮+ thin paper 📃? Genius! Singer: Kishore Kumar Lyrics: Rajendra Krishan Music: R.D. Burman Fun fact: A lesser-known, soulful sad version of this song also exists… dropping that soon. Stay connected with #VinylTalkies 🎧

Pure harakiri @nytimes ! You must be very proud of these “wonderful” columnists! @NickKristof !
But how can he “delete” the permanent “ism” from his mind? He will lose all institutional incentives and laurels. It is pure and pure harakiri.

Again, this proves that even big columnists of @nytimes don’t do basic, basic homework. Not knowing is not a problem, but not doing homework for a post/article is. The liberal travesty of “Ism” ! There is one benefit of this. It saves our time. No need to read them!
I will give @NickKristof a 0 for this, for not going deep enough on this journey. Sanskrit (śūnya - शून्य): Coined or adapted into mathematical text around the 5th–7th century by Indian mathematicians like Aryabhata and Brahmagupta to denote both the numerical value and a placeholder. Arabic (ṣifr - صِفْر): In the 8th and 9th centuries, Arab scholars translated śūnya into their own word for "empty," which is ṣifr. Medieval Latin (zephirum): Italian mathematician Fibonacci introduced the Hindu-Arabic numeral system to Europe in 1202, Latinizing ṣifr into zephirum. Italian & French (zefiro → zéro): The Latin term naturally softened into the Venetian/Italian zefiro (eventually shortened to zero) and entered French as zéro. English (zero): English adopted the word from French around 1598–1600.

I'll give RFK Jr. a 0 for this, using Arabic numerals, or perhaps a "zero," noting that the English word "zero" comes from the Arabic "sifr."

Nature, Dharm and Life are so well integrated here. In Sharad Purnima, In celebrations and in your words! Wonderful, @DrSonuBhaskar ji.
Sharad Purnima is special, but in Mithila, the land of Maa Sita, it carries a charm and warmth of its own. 🌕🙏 Celebrated as Kojagara (कोजगरा), this beautiful autumn full-moon festival brings families together to worship Maa Lakshmi, share makhana, paan and sweets, and celebrate traditions passed down through generations. Allow me to share an interesting custom from Mithila. Newly married grooms are specially honoured through the Chumaon ceremony, often followed by a playful game of Pachisi with cowrie shells, symbolising affection and the bond between two families. Even the name Kojagara comes from the Sanskrit “Ko Jagarti?” (को जागर्ति?), meaning “Who is awake?”, reflecting the belief that Maa Lakshmi visits and blesses those who remain awake in devotion beneath the autumn moon. For those of us with roots in Mithila, Kojagara is more than a festival; it is a cherished reminder of home, family, belonging and the timeless beauty of our cultural heritage. शुभ शरद पूर्णिमा एवं कोजगरा! 🌕 🪷 🙏

While the rest of India celebrates Sharad Purnima, Mithila/Bengal/Assam/Orrisa celebrates the grand festival of Kojagra/Kojagori Lakshmi Puja today reflecting the shared cultural and religious traditions of the region. It is believed that on this sacred night, Goddess Lakshmi descends to Earth and asks, Ko Jagrati? meaning, Who is awake. Those who remain awake in devotion and worship are believed to receive the divine blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. In Mithila Kojagra holds a particularly special place and is celebrated with unique traditions. Homes are beautifully decorated with traditional lamps and Aripan/Alpana (Mithila's traditional floor art). For newlyweds, especially the groom, this festival is one of the most significant celebrations. The bride's family sends Bhaar (traditional gifts and offerings), filling the with joy and festivity. The night is filled with traditional rituals, including the groom's Chumawan ceremony, the playing of the traditional Kaudi game, and moments of laughter and celebration with family members. Sharing paan and Mithila's GI-tagged makhana (fox nuts) as prasad is an essential part of Kojagra.

Prof. Arvind Sharma, Birks Professor of Comparative Religion at McGill University, passed away on 29 September 2026 at the age of 86. Prof. Sharma was a prolific scholar of Hinduism, Advaita Vedanta, and comparative religion. Sharma described himself as “an academic, who is also a Hindu; or conversely, as a Hindu, who is also an academic.” Here is my conversation with Prof. @subhash_kak and Prof. @RameshNRao about Prof. Sharma’s life, scholarship, and legacy on the Rooted & Roaming podcast. avatanskumar.substack.com/p/…
