When we watched the French Catch uncovered in 2020, I tried to capture gifs of unique holds, sequences, and character bits. I began posting them too early into this account so some are flagged, but if you start with the one below you can scroll back and forward to see/share them.

Gilbert Leduc vs Michel Chasine next (JIP: 9/20/57). Electric finishing stretch. Power bombs somehow disappeared from the world in the 70s and only reappeared in the late 80s, as if the NWA brokered some sort of deproliferation accord that ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

This could have ended up really bad. The crowd is getting increasingly pissed at the heel team of Roger Delaporte & Roger Guettier and throw a chair in the ring but unfortunately that only makes things worse for the future Lord, Al Hayes.

French Catch 1959 GIF Thread:
As we locked into chronological watching of the footage around '59, I'm going to try to do one thread per year.
First we have the hard headed Jose Tarres, one of the great Spanish draws, vs Dr. Adolf Kaiser, who here does a 1959 Full Nelson Slam.
1959 French Catch heelbutt counter. I love how exasperated Delaporte is watching it from the outside.

Jim Harris maybe one of the best sellers in the history of wrestling. The way he rocked on his back heels when he'd get punched was amazing, but look at that sell for the Largest of Male Parents.
The brilliance of Stan Hansen is that he gives an opponent more to work with than any other wrestler ever, so long as they can. Misawa tries so hard to contain him. It's the ultimate struggle. But if you succeed, Hansen's selling means more than anything.

“Buddy Rose’s brilliance is in the nuance. Overweight yet athletic enough to kip up and do a one handed push up, he makes both “out of shape” and “in terrific condition” true at once rather than an overt lie played just for comedy.”

I am increasingly convinced that Big Daddy's finisher was maybe the best move of the late 70s/early 80s and the functional equivalent of Goldberg's Jackhammer. He's doing it to the future Kamala here and he just absolutely flattens him. Amazing stuff. Ritual obliteration.
Another week, another Big Daddy match. This time, with arm-wrestling shenanigans against the future Kamala, Mississippi Mauler Jim Harris. Lot to see here, including how Daddy's act transferred to tangential pro wrestling bs and me referencing Doctor Who.

I am still coming to conclusions about Daddy in ring, but so much of what made him work was the sense of reassurance in a crumbling society, the careful control of vulnerability where fans got a taste of it but just a taste, understanding all would be alright in the end.

“What works works,” but everything that works isn’t inherently good just because it works.
On pro wrestling terminology, specifically (and I apologize in advance, to all of you and to myself most of all) "technical wrestling".
