New ECMWF data shows the *strongest subtropical jet stream* in its forecast history blowing across the Pacific and U.S. this winter into next spring, with record-strength winds predicted from California to Florida. There's even a connection to Europe. El Niño fuels more thunderstorms near the equator, which release heat high into the atmosphere. That extra warmth strengthens the Hadley circulation and steepens the temperature gradient between the tropics and the mid-latitudes, which strengthens the subtropical jet. And that's why such a stormy winter is anticipated across the western, southern and eastern United States.

A tornado watch has been issued for parts of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas until 10 PM CST

The threats associated with this watch are a couple strong tornadoes possible, scattered hail up to two inch size possible and scattered gusts up to 75 mph possible. Warm moist air and favorable shear ahead of our system pulling from the Rockies will support thunderstorms ahead of the west to east moving frontal boundary this week. SEVERE gusts and a few TORNADOES are possible, but like last week the severity of the tornadoes remains conditional as described in the SPC discussion this morning. Regardless if you go in a tornado watch or get a warning (which is worse), be ready to get to your safe place. SPC day 1 and 2 outlooks below with today being the highest threat of the week.
