They’re all winners, but what makes 4 of them different is how they win.
HERE IS WHY MOURINHO IS THE PUREST FOOTBALL GENIUS AND THE ONLY BUILDER AMONG THEM.
When a coach takes over a club, I look at their past 3 seasons, but I pay closer attention to the final 2. That gives me a clear picture of the club's state before they arrived.
This is why I don’t rate Pep. Every team he has coached was already dominating their league and Europe before he walked in. At Barca, they won the UCL a season before he arrived. At Bayern, they were the best team in Europe, he actually dismantled that squad and they never reached that level again until he left. He failed there. At Man City, they won 3 league titles in 5 years, finished 2nd and 4th, and reached a UCL semifinal right before he arrived. When Pep got there, he won 3 titles in his first 5 years but couldn't get past the UCL quarterfinals in that same span.
Mourinho is completely different. He consistently overperformed and elevated every club above the standard he met. That’s why he won trophies at clubs that hadn't tasted success in 17, 20, 45, and 50 years.
Let’s start with Porto. Mourinho arrived at a team that had gone 2 seasons without a league trophy. They had qualified for the UEL instead of the UCL because they finished 5th (their first time out of the top spots in a decade). Mourinho started rebuilding, and Porto won the UEL in his first full season, followed by the UCL the next year, ending a 17 year wait for the club. No manager in football history has ever done that. To put it in context, it’s like Aston Villa winning the UCL this season.
Then he moved to Chelsea. He walked into a club undergoing a massive structural transformation in a league dominated by Man Utd and Arsenal. Chelsea went trophyless the season before his arrival, though they did finish 2nd behind Arsenal's Invincibles. In his very first season, Mourinho won the EPL in style, Chelsea's first league title in 50 years, while setting records for the fewest goals conceded and 25 clean sheets in a single season (both records still stand today). He followed that up by winning the EPL back to back.
At Inter, the club had domestic dominance but persistent European underachievements. In the 2 seasons before Mourinho arrived, they were knocked out in the Round of 16 back to back by Valencia and Liverpool. In Mourinho's first season, they were eliminated by Man Utd in the Round of 16. The very next season? He won the UCL, ending a 45 year wait for the club.
At Real Madrid, Mourinho arrived when the club couldn’t get past the Round of 16 for 7 straight years, even after signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, and Benzema. Mourinho stepped in and immediately led them to 3 consecutive UCL semifinals. He shattered Pep’s Barca dominance by winning La Liga with a record 100 points and a record 121 goals, alongside a Copa del Rey, their first in 20 years.
When he came back to Chelsea, he set records by staying top of the table from day one to the last day to win another EPL. At Man Utd, who had qualified for the UEL before he arrived, he won the UEL (something Ferguson failed to do in 4 attempts), added 2 more trophies, and became their most successful manager of the post-Ferguson era. At Spurs, he kept them at the top of the table for 4 months, their longest run in 10 years. And at Roma, he won their first ever European trophy with a negative net spend (they qualified for the UECL before he arrived), then took them to the UEL final the next season.
Xavi’s La Liga-winning Barca and Arteta’s Arsenal, both with much bigger spending budgets, played in that same UEL edition and couldn’t even reach the final but Mourinho did with Roma.

Whenever I listen to people give accounts of Mourinho’s first stint [at Real Madrid], they always talk about his first season, especially the first match, and that doesn't tell the full story.
Mourinho spent three seasons in his first stint as Real Madrid manager. In his last six games against Barcelona, he recorded four wins and two draws; he dominated and dismantled that Barcelona team before he left.
Mourinho doesn’t park the bus against Barcelona. His football philosophy relies on transitions, direct play, and counterattacking football.
I stayed up until midnight last Sunday watching the #ElClasico between @FCBarcelona @realmadrid
Jose Mourinho and his boys produced a master class football lesson.
I feared that he would park the bus as he used to do in his first stint as the Madrid manager.
Back then he’d play a defensive midfield pairing of Sammy Khedira and Pepe, who is a centreback. He’d be ultra defensive and Barca mauled his team. I can’t forget that 5-0 drubbing at Camp Nou.
Last Sunday, we saw a different side of the Special One. He played offensive football against the mighty Barca in their backyard.
Tchoumeni was industrious as a midfield destroyer; Fede Valverde and Marc Cucurella were impregnable at right fullback and left fullback, respectively.
Arda Güler and Yan Diomande were brilliant in attack and tracking back helping the fullbacks.
Bernardo Silva was industrious in the heart of midfield and Jude Bellingham was just being the indomitable Jude, pulling strings in attack and defence.
Kylian Mbappé is improving with every game and was impervious in attack.
@realmadrid will be unstoppable this season. If they continue in this rich vein of form they’ll lift #LaLiga at a canter. They’re the only team that can stop @PSG_English and win the @ChampionsLeague this season.
#HalaMadrid
Keep it up Jose and the boys🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Yamal and many other players have had more minutes this season than Mbappé when you consider international appearances. Mbappé needs rest, but so do many other players.
🚨 RECORD: Kylian Mbappé has played the MOST minutes out of ANY outfield player in the top-5 leagues.
He has played 1170 minutes so far, missing only 9 minutes of possible action. @marca
Year 3 and he is still trying to instill 😭. I don't know how to break it to you but maybe the coach is not that good or your players are slow
Bayern Munich runs more than Barca, yet you will never see their fans complain Kompany is running the players into ground. Anyone saying Flick's tactics are exhausting is myopic and have a weak mentality.
Barça aren't even in the top 5 teams for distance covered in Europe. Have you ever seen Bayern fans complain about Kompany running players into the ground? No, because they don't have a lazy culture in their club.
That's what Flick wants to instil in Barcelona. But people who know nothing about football think Flick's tactics are the problem. The players are the problem. They have a weak and loser mentality and are stupidly lazy.
Why is it that every team Alonso manages suffers so many injuries? Could it be down to his training methods?
🚨🚨| Following Maxence Lacroix, Chelsea's centre-back situation is becoming increasingly concerning amid their growing injury problems. 🔵🚑

Chelsea could now be without 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐑 defensive options, with Lacroix potentially sidelined until 2027.
Real Madrid has played 6 out of the top 10 La Liga teams in the standings this season, with all of the top 4 matches being away games.
In contrast, Barcelona has only played 3 of the top 10 teams, 1 away game and 2 at home.
There is no way Real Madrid won't win La Liga this year if the referees remain neutral.
REAL MADRID HAS A HUGE ADVANTAGE TO WIN LA LIGA, AND BARCA FANS SHOULD FORGET LA LIGA THIS SEASON, ONLY IF LA LIGA REFEREES DO THEIR JOBS WELL.
Barca's fake start of the season gave their fans hope that their team is unbeatable, but what they failed to see was that they never played a tough game. In league competition, the toughest game to play is going to the stadium of the top 4 teams that finished on the league table last season.
Barca, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Real Betis finished in the top 4 last season. Facing any of these at their home is the toughest game you can play in La Liga.
Real Madrid has visited and played all 3 at their home, and they are the only top 4 team from last season that has visited and played the remaining 3 at their home.
Barca has only visited Real Betis's home among the top 4 from last season. Real Betis, until the red card, gave them their second toughest league game this season after the Real Madrid game. After the Real Madrid game, Barca will still visit Atletico and Real Madrid's home, and honestly, I don't see them getting more than 1 point in those 2 grounds.
Atletico still needs to play Barca, Real Madrid, and Real Betis away, and I also don't see them getting more than 1 point from the 3 grounds.
Real Betis will certainly not get any points at Barca, Real Madrid, and Atletico's grounds.
I know you will say that there are still other teams or it’s too early, but frankly, any team that gets all 9 points in their stadium against the other top 4 teams and still gets 3 points from them at their grounds is at an advantage to win the league title.
FUN FACTS: This season, Mourinho’s Real Madrid has faced all top 6 teams in the La Liga table, as well as 6 out of the top 10, with all matches against the top 5 being away games. This La Liga title belongs to Mourinho’s Real Madrid this season, provided the referees remain neutral.
🚨 STAT: Mourinho’s Real Madrid have just ONE POINT fewer after 10 La Liga games than his legendary 2011/12 side.
That team finished with 100 POINTS and 121 GOALS. @marca

The New York Times covered the Negreira case. The people behind NegreiraGate posted about it, Futbolgate posted about it, and countless Madrid fan pages did too. RMTV even released two videos.
Barcelona fans like this one missed all of it because they were too busy wiping away their tears after the El Clásico defeat. 🙃
In football, Brazil is to Barca what Spain is to Real Madrid.
🚨🗣️ 𝗡𝗘𝗪: Hansi Flick has spoken OUT that he wants Brazil to REDUCE Raphinha's playing time during international breaks! 🇧🇷⚠️
🗣️ Flick: “I've also spoken to Deco about this. It's an important issue for us.
“Raphinha is a VERY IMPORTANT player for the team. He returned INJURED from the last international break, and that was far from ideal for us.
“I know how much Raphinha LOVES Barcelona. He's one of our captains, and this club has a special place in his heart.
“But he's also Brazilian. When his national team calls him up, he answers.
“Of course, I would be HAPPY if we could manage his minutes and reduce them a little.
“We all know that travelling to Singapore and back is NOT ideal for a player, but there's nothing I can do to change that.”
Another thing you guys must have missed is that most of these Madrid players dreamed of playing under Mourinho even as kids. Jude Bellingham once said that his mum is a fan of Mourinho, and both he and his mom even asked Mourinho for a picture after that 2023/24 UCL final which Madrid won.
Konate spoke about Mourinho's aura the other day before their match against Roma.
It’s impossible to watch a Mourinho documentary without wondering what it actually feels like to go to war for him.
When you play for someone as big as Mourinho, you're literally living the dream.
When I said it here, some people might have thought I was a fool.
Mourinho is doing what other coaches like Xabi, Arbeloa even Carlo would do and people will complain, even his wife won't have the guts to post trash on her IG story.
The difference here is his approach, the way he must have spoken to them. That doesn't come with being a good coach, rather it comes with being psychologically intelligent, which Mourinho is.
Again, Mourinho is a genius 🧠🤍
If you’re talking about injuries, Madrid missing Courtois in that Classico did more harm than all of Barca’s injured players combined. Courtois would have saved that Raphinha goal because his reflexes easily deal with low shots, unlike Lunin. Take your L in peace.

Mourinho records against Arsenal:
Wins: 12
Draws: 8
Losses: 3
Mourinho notoriously went 13 matches without a defeat against Arsenal during his first major stint with Chelsea, and this includes against the Invincibility Arsenal team and the 2006 UCL finalists Arsenal team. So, I don’t see Mourinho’s Madrid losing against Arsenal, maybe a draw because it’s an away game.
