I regret to inform you that regardless of how broken academia is, you are still responsible for what you become during your PhD. Your advisor can guide you. Your university can give you a degree. Neither can make you an independent thinker. Stop chasing paper counts. Stop waiting for the perfect research direction. Stop confusing publications with scientific progress. Stay curious. Question everything. Take ownership of your research. The goal was never to become a paper-producing machine. It was to become a scientist.

people on this site just say literally anything but present it as truth . . studying a humanities or social science degree, eg philosophy precisely teaches you how to think critically 🤦‍♀️

I’ve been banned from entering Singapore & was just deported to Malaysia. I asked immigration to provide the grounds for the ban/deportation, but they said they could not disclose them. It’s stunning bcs I stayed there for 5 years & was conferred a doctoral degree on 31 January.

Channel 4 news wildly hyperbolising about Andrew ... that no British prince could ever imagine living out his years in jail. Uhhh, have they ever read Shakespeare? Doing just that is a mainstay of royals in the history plays 🤦🏼‍♀️

this is why it was important to me to have my Dr title on official documents, it was a way of escaping this archaic oppressive system which despite its absurdity is still accepted as normal
You know what's gross? Women get addressed by Miss, Mrs., or Ms. because society deems it important to know if she is single, married or widowed. Men, on the other hand, are only addressed as Mr. because their relationship to women does not affect their social status.

One minute you guys moan about non white people not integrating with English culture and when they do integrate by doing things like celebrating Christmas you moan again that they are integrating. Maybe the problem isn't them, maybe it's you.

NHS doctor here, Rupert. If you'd checked your facts before this racist dogwhistle, you'd know that every NHS doctor can speak English - as proven by their IELTS proficiency (look it up... or are you just a populist hatemonger for whom facts don't matter?). Kindness may not solve everything, but my God the hate you spew is builds nothing, improves nothing, and only stokes division.
A comment which sums up the mad delusion of many on the left. ‘Kindness’ can overcome migrant language issues in the NHS, I’m told. Good luck with that. I’ll go with the doctor who can actually speak English, thanks.

none of us PhDs think we’re smarter than the general population - we are weird yes but only because we willingly choose an academic career and dedicate years or our whole lives to a tiny area of intellectual thought
PhDs are supposed to be people so smart they’re weird. Instead, they’re only slightly smarter than the general population, on average. Thick right tail though, presumably STEM.

Some racist yelled and cursed at 3 young Muslim women from inside his Tesla truck for 3 minutes. That man was Perry Greene, the ex-husband of Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. So I made him apologize privately to them and their families for over 20 minutes, then sit for Friday sermon at their mosque to get educated about Islam, and then issue a public apology to the world. Only after my clients were satisfied with the apology and his community service, we offered a discounted settlement of $75,000. That’s $25,000 PER MINUTE of hate speech. I did all of this in 7 days. Alhamdulillah.

I hope everyone who reads Sunrise on the Reaping notices that the politics of smell is all over that book. The whole Hunger Games series, really. Olfactory ethics left, right & centre.

people who say “why do we need [fine arts, humanities degrees, mid-budget films] when they don’t make a ton of money?” are insufferable. why do we need chrysanthemums? why do we need bonfires or baleen whales or the color blue? we just do. we just do.

you don’t get a PhD so people call you Dr. as a term of respect, you get a PhD so your coworkers (who also have PhDs) call you Dr. as a term of affectionate mockery
