Huge result today in Brazil as voters vote for the party of nothing will happen narrowly defeating the alternative nothing happening party each led by proud new candidates who have been standing in elections since 1812

The idea that there are educated people with high-paying jobs walking among us, and in droves, are willing to go “you know what, I’ll give the Tories another chance” is too depressing to even contemplate.

België en @ENGIE_energie zijn erin geslaagd de kerncentrales Doel IV en Tihange III in een half jaar volledig te reviseren, alle veiligheidsprocedures te doorlopen en weer op te starten. Terwijl sluiting gepland was. Dat is een applausje waard, vindt u niet? #grafiekvandedag

He’s correct. The only sad thing about Wetherspoons is that it brings out the snobbery in the Brits. I’d take a random spoons over a random pub any day of the week. Don’t get me wrong, I love my local (non-spoons), but Wetherspoons are consistently excellent.
I have spent an inordinate amount of time in various Spoons this weekend owing to the awful weather and our awful public transport system. So while I wait for my Korean friend chicken burger here’s some of the under explored reasons why Spoons is so great: 1. They have real Heinz ketchup (ditto Heinz mustard, HP sauce etc). This is impressive when most food trucks and even restaurants etc now use cheaper supermarket-brand versions as Heinz has become so pricey 2. The southern fried chicken strips are better than the chicken selects in McDonald’s (and that’s a high bar) 3. The staff are nice (I’ve always found) 4. The spice bag is elite 5. There’s something for everyone - even Aperol Spritz! (£4.75) 6. The free re-fills on the coffee 7. Often they’re in great heritage buildings 8. The explicit invite on the pump to try before you choose. This is great Many more but my burger has now arrived

We can't brute force compute all possible moves in Go, a static game with a simple 19 x 19 grid, yet somehow people think we're going to simulate a dynamic system of trillions of cells each containing trillions of molecules.
If you had an exponential amount of compute you could solve simulate biology exactly and wouldn't need to run any experiments. Some of you will think "of course, but that's an unrealistic assumption" and others will think "no, you need experiments even with that much compute. That's just How It's Done". You would of course need evaluations once you have a solution, but you don't in principle need experiments to find it: Experiments are a way to save compute, dating from a time when it was much more expensive. And I think the presentation is exponential but real systems aren't irreducibly exponential. AlphaFold worked, after all.

Burnham is a much more authentic "man of the people" than Farage could ever dream of...

He's such a bizzare vacuous blairite void of a human. With Blair and Co you at least knew they had some personal motives and beliefs, but with Burnham you can't shake the feeling that you're looking at a bizzare attention seeking machine trained to appeal to British halfwits.

The idea that Gaza is a bigger, more important foreign policy issue than the Russian invasion of Ukraine is certifiably insane and more liberals/Democrats should just call it out for what it is.
Hasan: "What does it say for your credibility on foreign policy issues if you've got the two biggest foreign policy issues of our lifetime, Iraq and Gaza, both wrong?" Yglesias: "I don't know that those were the two biggest foreign policy issues of our lifetime..."

This is the type of book that is raising book sale numbers, I'd warrant we've dropped a significant % more over the last few years when it comes to actual non fantasy rape porn books being read

Earn £10k above average and you're a higher rate taxpayer. 🥴
Median annual pay for full-time employees has passed £40,000 for the first time (£40,911, up 4.5%). I think many people's mental benchmark for the “average salary” is still stuck at around £30k. Just over a third of full-time employees now earn above the higher-rate threshold!
