If you just read the headline, this very important point might be lost: “The test was not measuring whether students can read or do arithmetic, but whether they can take written or numerical information and use it to solve problems.” #literacy #numeracy theglobeandmail.com/canada/a…

The purpose of education is the betterment of humanity. It’s as simple & complex as that.
This means recognizing, valuing & supporting all of humanity. This should be so obvious that we don’t actually need to say/write it, but apparently we absolutely do need to. #OntEd #OnPoli – at Toronto, Ontario

It could happen that the children of poorer and middle-class #parents will be raised by screens, while the children of Silicon Valley's elite will be going back to wooden toys and the luxury of human interaction @nytimes nyti.ms/2PsZXP8 #edchat #edtech #parenting

Town halls for #OntEd consultation start Oct 19. 1 topic is #EQAO. Reminder Independent Review of Assessment, involving 5000+ Ontarians, reported in March. Final Report is no longer available on Ministry website. Available here oise.utoronto.ca/preview/lha… & via @HargreavesBC #OnPoli
I’m building up my classroom library in preparation for going back to the classroom in March. I’ll be teaching Grade 4/5 for the first time and would love some book recommendations. What are 9-11 year olds reading these days? #ugdsb #booklover #CanLit

Look what arrived at my door! All signed by the author and the #CanadaReads defender. Thanks, @cbcbooks! #neverstopreading #CanLit
I finally finished all 100 novels that make you proud to be Canadian. I read books that I never would have picked up otherwise, met new authors, and found new favourites. Thanks for the great experience, @cbcbooks! What to read next... #canlit cbc.ca/books/100-novels-that…
I have @metromorning on every morning and my 5 month old doesn’t usually pay any attention. This morning as soon as she hear @SharonandBram she perked up and started smiling and bopping along. I love that I can share such a great part of my childhood with her.

Today is the first time I haven’t headed back to school after Labour Day in 30 years. While it feels a bit weird, I’m so grateful to live in a country that supports me spending this time with my daughter. Happy first day of school, everyone!

Reminder: On PISA, Ontario is above the Canadian Math average and only behind Singapore when compared to other countries. The sky is not falling. #OntEd /via @globeandmail theglobeandmail.com/opinion/…
There’s a major flaw in the argument of this opinion piece. It states that many teachers don’t know the math they need to teach, but most teachers went to school when so-called “basics” were taught via rote learning. @globeandmail theglobeandmail.com/amp/opin…
If rote learning of basics worked, wouldn’t teachers know the math? If teachers don’t know the math, why would the method that didn’t work for them work for current students? @globeandmail
I may not be going back to school this fall, but that didn’t stop me from buying a new notebook. #mathforlife #ugmath

Do you agree with the teacher or the student?

A flying lantern landed on our shed at Point Clark today with what we think is a bag of ashes attached to it. Does anyone recognize it? What do we do now?
During the health portion of my Grade 9 gym class, a student asked how same-sex couples have sex. The teacher gave a clear, concise, and informative response, free of judgement. That was in 1998. She didn’t need a curriculum to teach us what we needed to learn. #sexed /1
But what about classes where kids don’t ask? Or topics kids might not know enough to ask about? It doesn’t mean they’re not curious or that they don’t need to know. A curriculum supports teachers and helps all students have access to the necessary info, whether they ask or not /2
A research-based curriculum that has undergone significant consultation ensures our students have access to age-appropriate information for their health and safety. The 2015 Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum is that and should be taught in schools. #sexed /3
