When Human Lives Become Business Transactions 🇺🇸🇺🇦 Here’s what we’re learning about Trump & Co approach to ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. According to Reuters and Le Monde, Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have been pushing Ukraine to stop attacking Russian oil refineries while Washington pursues diesel deals and broader economic arrangements with Moscow. Le Monde also reports that Witkoff proposed restoring Russian oil and gas transit through Ukraine as part of a postwar prosperity plan. He reportedly enraged Budanov so much with it that he could barely hold his anger. The Trump administration argues that economic incentives could bring Putin back to peace negotiations. But there’s a fundamental contradiction here. Russia invades Ukraine, destroys cities, kills civilians, and attacks Ukrainian infrastructure. Ukraine strikes back at Russia’s energy industry, an important source of revenue for its war. And Washington pressures Ukraine to stop while offering Russia new commercial opportunities. At what point does diplomacy become a business negotiation in which the aggressor gets economic incentives and the country defending itself gets additional pressure? We’re talking about a war involving hundreds of thousands of casualties, destroyed communities, and millions of displaced people. Human lives are not a damn business transactions. And peace should not be confused with a profitable deal.
