It is interesting how when others see your success, the ones who talk behind your back and are generally very sick people all the sudden want to be friends again. As if I don’t remember who did and said what.

Happy Birthday Burt Lancaster
One of Hollywood’s most notable leading men, the Academy Award-winning Lancaster was known for the complexity of his acting, and was adept at playing tough, uncompromising characters, who displayed a surprising degree of sensitivity. The American Film Institute ranks him as the 19th greatest male star of classic Hollywood. The ruggedly handsome actor was born in 1913, in New York. He began acrobatic training, and by the 1930s had joined a circus; however, an injury forced him to quit. After his war service, he was spotted by Hollywood agent, Harold Hecht, and brought to the attention of producer Hal B. Wallis, who signed Lancaster to a contract. His breakthrough came in 1946's “The Killers”, opposite Ava Gardner. Directed by Robert Siodmak, the film was a huge commercial and critical success and is regarded as a classic of the noir genre. It made Lancaster a star overnight. The actor then appeared in “Brute Force”, a prison drama, and “I Walk Alone”, co-starring Lizabeth Scott. This was followed by the edge of your seat thriller, “Sorry, Wrong Number” (1948), with Barbara Stanwyck. Lancaster and Hecht then formed their own company, Norma Productions, and signed a picture deal with Warner Bros. Their first film was 1950's “The Flame and the Arrow”, a swashbuckler in which Lancaster displayed his acrobatic skills and impressive physique. It was Warners' most popular film of the year. In 1951, the actor/producer duo changed the company's name to Hecht-Lancaster Productions, making another swashbuckler: 1952's “The Crimson Pirate”. A parody of the genre, Lancaster emphasised the absurdity of the story with comic spectacles. In 1953, he starred in his biggest hit so far, the classic “From Here to Eternity”, co-starring Deborah Kerr, Montgomery Clift and Frank Sinatra, His steamy beach scene with Kerr has become iconic and much parodied, In 1955, screenwriter James Hill was made an equal partner in Hecht-Lancaster. The company produced “Trapeze” in 1956, with Lancaster again performing many of his stunts. Co-starring Tony Curtis and a sexed-up Gina Lollobrigida, it was a huge box office success. Lancaster re-teamed with Curtis for “Sweet Smell of Success”, one of his best films. “Separate Tables” (1958), a touching boarding house drama with David Niven, Deborah Kerr and Rita Hayworth, received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, and Niven won for Best Actor. Lancaster then played the title role in “Elmer Gantry” for which he received his only Oscar for his mesmerising portrayal of a conman. He starred in the important and highly praised “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961), alongside Spencer Tracy, Richard Widmark and Marlene Dietrich. In “Birdman of Alcatraz” (1962), the actor played a murderer incarcerated for life, who begins to collect and study birds. His moving performance earned him another Oscar nod. Lancaster then travelled to Sicily to star in “The Leopard” (1963), Luchino Visconti’s masterpiece, co-starring Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale. It was one of his favourite films. He had a huge success in “Airport” (1970), with Dean Martin, Van Heflin, Helen Hayes, and Jacqueline Bisset; was top-billed in “Go Tell the Spartans” a Vietnam War film, and had a leading role in the superb “Zulu Dawn” (1979). He turned to character acting in the 1980s, and his final films included “Separate But Equal” (1991), with Sidney Poitier. Lancaster was a supporter of liberal political causes. He frequently spoke out in favour of minorities, and campaigned against the death penalty. Tony Curtis said: "Here's this great big aggressive guy, playing these big tough men, and he has the soul of Socrates and Plato. He was a Greek philosopher with a sense that everybody was equal” - a slight exaggeration, as Greek philosophers thought nothing of the sort. Lancaster died of a heart attack in October, 1994, aged 80.

Severe storms are possible from this afternoon into the overnight hours. The severe weather risk is greatest from 5 to 9 pm, but may persist through midnight. Damaging winds are the most likely hazard but a few tornadoes are possible embedded within a line of storms.

Remember, the only app you'll find my live stream on is @reconwx . It's free and features all of our team members. We've worked out in-app tipping/support for chasers, too. Really trying to make this give back what people put in. Next time you see some of our friends streaming, remember that they're volunteering for this research mission and if you so choose, you can support them in-app or via their direct tipping links.

I don’t want to hear a single person say another word about #Chiefs getting calls from refs this season.

On the way for a potential severe weather episode tomorrow. Our @reconwx Field Team now streams in our own app. It’s free, no subscriptions needed.
I’ve got a few pieces of equipment with to test tomorrow. We will go over them later.

We've now got a severe thunderstorm risk in place for tomorrow. The SPC issued a level 1 of 2 risk going from Omaha up to nearly Duluth. There's also a 2% (very low) tornado risk from south central Minnesota into the Minneapolis region. Model output looks pretty pathetic when it comes to future radar, but some of the composite indices show some potential for a few bigger storms if the atmosphere can destabilize after any morning rain showers.
This isn't likely going to be a major event and I don't want anyone to be alarmed by the giant yellow blow and red circle, but it's worth paying attention to. Our Recon Weather app will give you free push notifications for warnings and watches, so it may be a good time to check that out.

Cold air follows showers this evening accelerating NW winds to ~25-30 MPH. Gusts continue as temps fall thru the night with highs Fri in the low 50s. Winds gust ~30-40 MPH expected Fri. Lows Fri → Sat dip into the 30s bringing chances for our first frost/freeze of the season.

I'm heading to southern Kansas today with two STING radiosondes to demonstrate the system and collect wind profiles near potential supercells. An SPC level 2 of 5 risk in place, with a slightly elevated tornado risk in the red 5% area.
The plan is to launch from the same suitable location roughly 10-30 minutes apart, conditions permitting, and compare the winds sampled by each balloon. These sondes track position and elevation to produce wind profiles and hodographs.
It’s a small preview of our bigger research goal: understanding how the low-level wind environment varies around supercells and what a single sounding might miss. Today’s launches explore changes between sampling times, while our larger coordinated deployments in 2027 will compare multiple locations at nearly the same time.
I'll be live this afternoon. You can support the mission on our site: ReconWx.org

A couple of years ago I was hoping the cat distribution system would send me a cute tiny kitten. Instead, I got a roughed up, dirty, mean old Tom cat. I called him Bruiser. It took 1.5 years before I could even pet him even though I fed him every day.
Last night he lay in my arms and cuddled against me on the patio couch. He kneaded against me. My heart is bursting with love for this boy. He is a soulmate cat. You don’t get many of those in a lifetime. Never doubt the cat distribution system!!! CDS is always right.
