I had the pleasure of giving a guest lecture for the Human Centred Security module @UofGlasgow. I shared insights from my PhD on usable security research and the work we’re doing @AbertayCQ with industry partners.
Thanks to @MKhamisHCI for the invitation!

Last week @Melvin_Security gave a GIST talk presenting his work on protecting people’s privacy while wearing everyday AR headsets. He introduced different archetypes that make contexts private and require different levels of data collection.

Last week @Melvin_Security and Martina Rucco from @TheSIRIUSLab in @GlasgowCS presented our two papers in the IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (#ISMAR2024) on #ARPrivacy and on Deceptive and Manipulative Designs in AR #AREthics.
I had the pleasure of presenting my paper titled: Don’t Record My Private pARts: Understanding The Role of Sensitive Contexts and Privacy Perceptions in Influencing Attitudes Towards Everyday Augmented Reality Sensor Usage at #ISMAR2024 in Seattle. W/ @MKhamisHCI and @MarkHCI 1/5
Our results provide insights into privacy-invasive contexts when people want to limit and restrict their AR sensors, building towards automating permission configurations during the prolonged use of everyday AR headsets. 4/5

I had a lot of fun at #CHI2024, meeting people and presenting my paper- 'What You Experience is What We Collect: User Experience Based Fine-Grained Permissions for Everyday Augmented Reality'. The paper was also coauthored by @MarkHCI and @MKhamisHCI.

ALT We propose a new permissions access control that accounts for the prolonged use of everyday AR headsets. Our prompt provides users variable control over the fidelity of data they provide to an application while showing a representation of the application user experience at the current data fidelity level. The current application is Subtitle: an app that provides situational awareness to AR users about the people in their surroundings. Images 1 to 5 show mockups we evaluated in AR; each image shows the different levels of data access that can be provided, along with how the application adapts to more data.
Our system allowed users to better understand what data an app needed, how the data would be used, and why the data was requested in the first place.
Participants found that our method allowed for better-informed privacy decisions than current AR, Android, and iOS prompts.
