WEDNESDAY 28th OCTOBER 6PM AEDT | FREE OBSTETRICS SEMINAR | BETTER BIRTHS @ TWILIGHT
This one is SUPER relevant for all of us at the coal face... how we practice... how we care... how we can facilitate Better Births @ Twilight.
We will spend the evening exploring innovative approaches and important conversations around improving birth experiences for women and families. Our 3 amazing speakers will give you the practical strategies to fill your toolbox for providing high quality, evidence based intrapartum care:
- Dr Sasha Skinner: Making Operative Birth Better: The operative vaginal birth bundle
- Dr Stephen Cole: Making Caesarean Section Birth Better: Maternal assisted caesarean section
- Prof Ryan Hodges: When We Don’t Agree: Duty of care, declining care and consent
And as always, we will have plenty of time for questions from our global audience.
There is something for everyone- whether you're a midwife, GP or obstetrician at the coalface- or working in leadership to ensure safe, high quality, effective and evidence based intrapartum care!
Twilight is free and always will be, but you need to register to access our live broadcast and on-demand recordings.

We're thrilled to share that our own Professor Lisa Hui has been awarded a prestigious 2027 Churchill Fellowship, one of just 75 awarded across Australia.
As a maternal fetal medicine specialist, Lisa cares for families when unexpected complications arise during pregnancy. One of the most difficult questions she hears from parents affected by congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) is, "Could this have been prevented?"
CMV is the most common infectious cause of disability in newborns, yet many expectant parents have never heard of it or how to reduce their risk of infection during pregnancy. Through her Churchill Fellowship, Lisa will visit leading centres in Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland to learn how antenatal CMV screening and prevention have been successfully embedded into routine pregnancy care.
Lisa hopes to bring these insights back to Australia to help make CMV prevention a routine part of pregnancy care - so that more families have access to the knowledge and support they need, before it's too late.
Congratulations, Lisa, on this incredibly well-deserved recognition. We can't wait to see the impact this important work will have on improving outcomes for mothers and babies.

TOMORROW! Join for the latest Global Neonatal Journal Club! Online and FREE!
The team will be discussing a SUPER HOT question: Do we finally have evidence to help choose a starting oxygen level for the stabilisation of moderate - late preterm infants in the delivery room?
We think we should use air (21%) for term infants in the delivery room, 30% for very preterm infants, and probably 60% for extremely preterm infants, but there has been very little evidence to guide what initial oxygen we should use for the MOST COMMON preterm infants: those born moderate-late preterm at 32-35 weeks' gestation.
So! Your trusty GNJC crew have pounced on this newly released paper and, alongside a global panel of experts, will help you understand how this research will change your practice.
Our world class panellists include:
🌏 Prof Peter Davis (Australia)
🌎 Prof Max Vento (Spain)
🌍 Prof Ola Didrik Saugstad (Norway)
🌏 Prof Ju Lee Oei
As well as team GNJC: Prof Brett Manley and Dr Shiraz Badurdeen.
PLUS: We are thrilled to hear from 2 leading authors A/Prof Louise Owen and Dr Stacey Peart in our 'From the Authors Desk' Interview.
Sign up for FREE today! mercyperinatal.com/event/gnj… or the link in our bio!
The recording link and attendance certificate will be sent post-event to all registrants.

🔥 HOT OFF THE PRESSES | Global Neonatal Journal Club | Wednesday 30th September | The AIROPLANE Cluster Randomized Crossover Trial | RELEASED JUST LAST WEEK! 🔥
Do we finally have evidence to help choose a starting oxygen level for the stabilisation of moderate - late preterm infants in the delivery room?
Your trusty GNJC crew have pounced on this newly released paper and, alongside an impeccable global panel, will help you understand how this research will change your practice tomorrow!
Led by Dr Stacey Peart and A/Prof Louise Owen (Melbourne), the AIROPLANE trial enrolled over 1800 moderate-late preterm infants across 26 Australian hospitals, including both non-tertiary and tertiary centres. Plus, we will discuss some interesting features of the trial design.
With panellists: Prof's Peter Davis (Australia), Max Vento (Spain) and Ola Didrig Saugstad (Norway), alongside Prof Brett Manley, Prof Ju Le Oei and Dr Shiraz Badurdeen, this is a session not to be missed!
GNJC is free to watch live and via playback, but you need to register. Head to: mercyperinatal.com/event/gnj… or the link in our bio!

We are thrilled that Dr Melvin Marzan’s latest paper was published in the Medical Journal of Australia last month: “Temporal Trends in Preterm Birth Associated With Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy in Victoria, Australia”.
Melvin is an epidemiologist and biostatistician at Mercy Perinatal with a special interest in perinatal and reproductive epidemiology. He is part of the Hui Research Group, led by our very own Professor Lisa Hui, who also helped lead this study.
Using data from over 770,000 births in Victoria, the study found that although high blood pressure in pregnancy has become more common, preterm birth in these pregnancies has actually decreased – mainly due to fewer planned early deliveries. Between mid-2018 and the end of 2021, there were an estimated 89 fewer preterm births linked to hypertension than expected based on earlier trends.
This improvement likely reflects changes in care – better risk assessment, targeted aspirin use, closer antenatal monitoring, and newer tests that help identify women who can safely continue pregnancy for longer. Reassuringly, this shift to later birth was not associated with higher rates of maternal ICU admission or stillbirth.
These findings show that reducing preterm birth is achievable even as key risk factors become more common. We are incredibly proud of Melvin, Lisa and the team for this important piece of work.
The Global Obstetric Update 2026 has officially SOLD OUT of in-person tickets. We are thrilled to welcome all 500+ of our delegates, speakers, sponsors and team members to the Park Hyatt, Melbourne in just over 2 months.

✨ Register now for Tonight's FREE MFM SEMINAR - FETAL HYDROPS @ TWILIGHT - available live via Zoom and post-event via recording!✨
We're delighted to have three outstanding speakers who will guide us through the practical aspects of managing fetal hydrops:
Dr Hannah Skrzypek, opening with ‘The Clinician's Toolbox: An Approach to Fetal Hydrops’
Then switching gears with:
A/Prof Ali Fung on ‘Hydrops: Diagnosis and Management of Fetal Anaemia’
And finally Dr Darren Hutchinson will present on the ‘Diagnosis and management of fetal supraventricular tachycardia’
Few diagnoses generate as many questions in the ultrasound room as fetal hydrops. Although uncommon, it remains one of the most challenging conditions we encounter in fetal medicine- requiring a thoughtful, systematic diagnostic approach and close collaboration across obstetrics, fetal medicine, paediatric subspecialties and neonatology.
Importantly, some causes are highly treatable, making timely recognition critical for both fetal and neonatal outcomes.
