Casinos and the stock market are very different games, but they have something important in common: The environment is designed to influence how you play. Casinos use free drinks, rewards, lights, sounds, and jackpots. Markets have notifications, trending tickers, gamified P/Ls, social media hype, instant execution, and endless opportunities to trade. Nobody forces you to play their game, their way, by their rules. They just make it incredibly easy to do so. And if you walk in without a plan, it’s easy to start playing by their rules instead of yours. That’s why your trading plan matters. Know your risk. Know your setups. Know your exits. Know when you’re done.. before your emotions can influence those decisions. Just like if you walk into a casino, you should know how much you’re willing to put into the machines, what you’re there to do, and when you’re walking away.. before the lights, drinks, jackpots, and emotions start influencing those decisions. I spent about three years working in casinos, watching how that environment affects people. And now, after more than five years working around financial markets.. talking with professional traders, CEOs, insiders, and people from different corners of the industry.. I’ve started to see a lot of the same psychology. The biggest lesson from both: know what room you’re walking into, and have your own rules before you get stuck playing by the houses rules.
