We also found that some industrial processes and environmental conditions significantly influence ARG presence and spread.
This opens doors to interventions in food systems to curb AMR risk.
~40% of ARGs were linked to mobile genetic elements—a major concern due to their potential for horizontal gene transfer across bacteria.
This can accelerate the spread of resistance.
Many ARGs were found in clinically relevant ESKAPEE bacteria, such as E. coli, S. aureus or K. pneumoniae
These are major drivers of difficult-to-treat infections in hospitals.

• >70% of known ARGs are present in the food production chain
• Most prevalent: genes conferring resistance to tetracyclines, beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, macrolides

We analyzed nearly 2,000 samples from raw foods (milk, meat, fish, cheese, veg) and food processing environments across 100+ European companies.
Using whole metagenome sequencing, we looked for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs).
