Sounds like the Giants have backed out of a deal for Joey Porter Jr. Recent rumors suggest Steelers want a 2nd round pick. Also, sounds like the Cowboys and Lions are the current front runners. 🍿

Seven minute opening statement from Kelvin Sheppard today. Here's all of it: So I'll start, because I haven't seen you all in a while, we've played two games since, so I'll start backtracking and kind of recapping the first two weeks. Let's start with Week 1 the Saints. Going into New Orleans game, we had a point of emphasis going into that game. We wanted to do three things essentially. (First), be dominant in the run game. I believe that game we left with a 3.6 average (allowed). Create chaos and confusion for the quarterback, which we thought would lead to takeaways and things like that. And for the better part of that game, we thought we did that. I believe we walked away with three takeaways in that game. Had the opportunity for two more. First and foremost, give credit to that team. It's a good football team. They came out. But we went into that game with an identity that we wanted to put on tape, and for the better part of that game, we did. We had them right where we wanted (them), and in this league, when you have teams almost choked out, you have to finish. Because if you let them hang around, you let them lie around, the inevitable thing is for them to come back and put you in situations you don't want to be in.Then, the third thing was finish. And we ended up finishing, not the way that I wanted, but we ended up finishing. So we did that and you might know before, guys, I stood up here and I said, 'All right, we played three quarters good, but in the fourth quarter, you take that play out.' Well, we're no longer doing that this year because taking those plays out is the exact plays that's been the demise to our defense. Leading into a short week going to Buffalo, we knew the task at hand was tall. Playing one of, if not the best player in the NFL, behind center in Josh Allen, we knew the margin for error was very minute. And that's every week in this league, but to be real, guys, when you play high-, prolific offenses like that, it shrinks even more to where there's no margin for error. We knew that. When I say that, coming out of half, I believe we had 77 pass yards total (allowed). And then the scramble play to Olave, that I think netted 40-something yards, kind of broke the dam and led to them finishing with, I think, around 400 yards passing, or something like that. But nonetheless, we won the game. And that's what you go out each week. Whatever it takes to win the game, we finish with the win. Week 1, the explosive category coming off the self-scout, that was the big thing. That was the big talk of this offseason, was the explosives that was generated, primarily at the back half of last year. And we've failed in that category, up to this point, and that starts with me.One of the top keys to victory going into that week on the short week was make this team go the long, hard way. We knew we had to do that. We knew he was going to make plays. That's just realistic, that's reality. OK, I got that, but you cannot give this player things, you can't give this team things. And we did that. We failed. In Week 1, I believe we had three explosive runs, eight pass (allowed). And that kind of flipped in Week 2 to eight run, four pass. And you can say, 'You nutted up the run, you nutted up the run, and then on four or five plays, what happened?' Well, no, no, no. Those, that is the single-hand demise to this defense right, now that's trickling to the team's kind of overall success. And what I mean by that is it lies right within the explosives. So what do we do? We're not going to wait for the bye week this year. We're not going to wait. What we chose to do is go in as a staff and attack with kind of extra days that we had, as what we would do in the bye week and self-scout. Let's really look at it. Why is this stuff happening? Let's not do any finger-pointing. No, that's for losers. Let's find solutions. Let's find answers and make sure we have answers for these players Monday when they come back in this building. How are we going to fix it? Let's not just show them and say, this is what you're supposed to be doing. We've already done that. We've already told them what you should be doing. Let's find out why. And let's get that answered. So on Monday, that's how we attacked this week. We didn't even focus on the Jets. We focused on ourselves. We reviewed the Buffalo game, but we also pulled from the New Orleans game, and what we got was 23 explosives. And within that, 75% of it, guys, are self-induced. And as frustrated as it might be for the media, for our fan base out there, I got it, but it doesn't frustrate anybody as much as it does these coaches and players that's put this time in to correct this stuff and make it happen. So why is it happening? So let's turn on the tape. Turn on all 23 (plays) and just go down the list. Let's bang away. 'Nope, tell me what you're doing. Tell me what you're supposed to be doing. Coaches, don't say a word. Let's let (the players) talk.' Because right now, guys, there's a gap. There's a clear gap from meetings and practice, what's taking place at 222 (Republic) and then game day. And how can we close the gap? 'Guys, I'm not here to demean anyone, coaches included. I'm not saying you're not coaching, but we gotta do something different, guys, than we've been doing to make sure this gap is closed from meetings and practice to game day.' I think that was one of the most transparent (meetings). There was a lot of honesty said out loud in that meeting, player to player, player to coach, coach to player. And we hashed out some things. But when it comes down to it, we're going into this week against another good football team, led by a dear friend of all of us, with Aaron Glenn, that we understand in this game how we need to play because of how they're going to play. You have to play mistake-free football because that's how they play. You can't give teams anything in this league. If that's pulling back, if that's -- whatever we need to do, how can I help you? And it starts with me, guys. That's all the message was. How can we close this gap on this play? Is it something else that you want to be doing? Because we did this here, but it's not showing up. And that's all I've been focused on. And then trying as much as we can, guys, once we flush that, let's move forward. Because you get caught looking in your rear-view so much, you don't see the opportunity that you have in front of you trying to play a catch-up game of, oh, we did this last week. No, no, no. What does it take to win this week, guys? Let's clean this stuff up. Let's have purpose and meaning to it. Let's get the whys corrected. And then this week, moving forward, guys, let's look forward. What's done is done. Let's move forward. So that's been the message. It's a clear way that we know we have to go into this game and play. The Jets, they control the football. Time of possession right now, I think they're averaging around 38 minutes. That's not by accident. They are a run-first oriented team. And we said the identity of this defense this year, guys -- I'm going to be loud and clear about this, was we are going to stop the run, and we will create takeaways. We have to thrive and build on that, and everything else will just be a byproduct of starting with those two major things in mind. They're going to run it, run it, run it. And when you think they're not going to run it, they're going to run it again. So we understand that going into this game, how we view it.
