My book is now out in paperback! It is a comparative perspective on early cities, from a social-science perspective (population, economics, politics). I cover both top-down & bottom-up influences on urban life. 29 case studies, and many illustrations. bit.ly/40iU33d
My cancer is gone (at least for now). The PET scan showed a "Full metabolic response." The docs don't want to use the term "remission" until the 3-month scan. The CAR-T process was rough, and it leaves me seriously immunocompromised, for up to a year, and fatigued for some time.
Just had a multi-author Perspective accepted by Nature Cities: "Urban Relocation in the Past." Working on final submission details. This case (Calixtlahuaca to Toluca) is not included; we discuss urban traditions where relocation was common. For Calix see:

On ASOR and my Choice to Affectively Disengage
Today, after twenty years as a member of @ASOResearch, I am choosing to let my membership lapse. I am choosing affective disengagement, meaning that I am withdrawing my participation and divesting from the organization.

Great music in the Hispanic Heritage Awards tonight. One award was given to the people of Minnesota for their actions in response to ICE. The Tigre’s del Norte performed several times; one was a spoken tribute to Minnesotans. I especially liked Ximena Sarinena and Oscar D’Leon
Daughter Heather, @heathercolleen3 is here for a few weeks helping with my recovery. She made this nice video of Kino in the pool.

"If people cannot write well, they cannot think well, and if they cannot think well, others will do their thinking for them."
― George Orwell
The head of the philosophy department at Williams College downplays the pedagogical value of writing:
“What if we are mistaken in treating writing as the highest cultivation of thought? The evidence that supports this belief is thin at best. Writing can be useful cognitive scaffolding for memory and self-regulated learning, but the notion that it is the best process for developing thinking skills is a fairly recent idea, traceable to the 1970s writing-across-the-curriculum movement.”

The next person who interviews Ben Rhodes, @brhodes, can ask whether his colleague Jake Sullivan, @jakejsullivan, in the Dem foreign policy group National Security Action should be giving paid speeches to weapons contractors profiting from war in Gaza.

@jgo34 @profmarkcollard @samhaselby (I agree completely with Martin, there are big problems).
Cancer update. I am in the Mayo Clinic hospital for a few days. I have the new cells, I am now a Genetically Modified Organism. Feeling good so far, early test results are good.

Tell your boss that I gave you the rest of the week off so you can explore this amazing interactive map showing the road network of the Roman Empire. This is so much fun to explore you can compare the Ancient and Modern road network for example. Great stuff. Your boss will understand... Source: itiner-e.org
After 3 days of lymphodepleting chemotherapy, I have no immune system. Monday i get my genetically modified T-cells back ( CAR T-cell therapy), and they will zap the remaining lymphoma. But I will be immunocompromised for a year. I guess I will be a GMO.
Surprised to find that Scottsdale has sidewalk markers for Arizona historical figures. We saw Cochise and Padre Kino. We’ll have to bring Kino to see this; he’ll probably pee on it.
Anyone have a pdf of the new 4th ed of "Being a Scientist," NAS? The website doesn't seem to include a pdf download.
