This is huge news for our democracy. 16 and 17 year olds will have the vote in the election. Extending the franchise is vital to nurturing more active citizens for the future health of our democracy.

This is a huge win. Govt announces that mayors and PCCs will be elected under a fairer, more representative system (Supplementary Vote) again. Means more choice for voters, more votes will count towards the result and ensure candidates will need to secure broad support from their communities to win power.
As part of a new bill, the government is planning to reintroduce the Supplementary Vote system for mayoral and PCC elections. This is a hugely welcome return, and a change we have been calling for – to put more choice back into the hands of voters.

We compared this year’s locals to 2013, when UKIP hit its high watermark in equivalent council elections. Then the Tories enjoyed a more than 10-point winner's bonus, with Labour getting a 2.9-point one. This compares to UKIP suffering the heaviest penalty, -13 points

TL;DR: Reform have reached a decisive tipping point where FPTP is has heavily favoured them in a way only Labour and the Tories have seen before. Also, in electoral terms, FPTP is your best friend… until suddenly it’s your worst enemy.

Reform enjoyed a FPTP 'winners bonus' at the locals, according to @electoralreform analysis — a major electoral breakthrough Farage's party won just below 31% of the vote, but over 40% of seats Labour, on the other hand, won just 5% of seats on 1/5 despite winning 14% vote

Really good read from @estwebber on the impending battle over Lords reform and the move to scrap the 92 hereditary peers. The UK being a country that still appoints legislators by birthright in 2024... A couple of highlights: politico.eu/article/the-last…

Then there's this classic: the hope reform won’t happen, not because it isn't much-needed and long, long overdue, but because it’s hard. Tbf, is partly the reason the UK is still a democracy that has people legislating by birthright in the 21st century.

The strongest foundation for any legislature (primary or revising etc) is that its members are chosen by and accountable to the people who live under the laws it makes. Change my mind...

"The only bias in the electoral system should be towards the voter." Darren Hughes, of the Electoral Reform Society, tells #R4Today voters are not seeing 'seats match votes' with the current system, which gave Labour a huge majority on less than 35% of votes.

Voted. Always get a feeling when I approach the polling station. Act feels mundane in some ways, but we’re in a minority globally who get to have a democratic say in how we are governed. Remember, you need ID this time to vote #GeneralElection24
