Some personal news: In July I’ll start as The Post’s first Sydney bureau chief! I’ve dreamed of being a foreign correspondent since I was a freelancer in Mexico and the incredible @BoothWilliam took me under his wing.

I would never say that @barneyronay is wasted writing about sport because I lap his stuff up. But this is also superb on the politics and sociology of PSG in a rioting Paris

10 journalists from Serbia's N1 resigned today. The channel was for a long time the only TV channel that issued reports critical of the government. In May, its parent company was sold to to Luxembourg-based European Future Media Investments, managed by Alpac Capital. (After Alpac bought Euronews in 2022, reporters from Direkt36 and Le Monde showed that the acquisition was partly financed by Hungarian state capital and companies connected to the political network of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.) But back to the resignations. Here's an excerpt of the letter the 10 journalists sent to their management, which was shared with me: "Under the new management, we have witnessed falsehoods, manipulation, insidious censorship, the public discrediting of colleagues, their professional marginalisation, insults and humiliation, changes to programme editors, and a refusal to engage in open discussions about the problems. While genuine dialogue within the newsroom has been eliminated, the illusion of dialogue is being created on air. We do not want to take part in misleading our audience through the simulation of debates, the forced presentation of opposing political actors as equivalent, and the staging of normality while disregarding the authorities’ long-standing and well-documented treatment of N1, as well as the broader social and political context in which we live and work. Precisely because Serbia is facing the most unpredictable elections since N1 was established, we refuse, under these circumstances, to lend legitimacy to an editorial policy we cannot stand behind. The new management has restricted our scope for action to such an extent that our remaining at N1 would have no impact on what its programming looks like in the days ahead."

Neither Cartier-Bresson, Banksy nor Cold War Steve could have come up with such an image. Absolutely perfect composition and lighting (even the road signs are perfect)! 😍

At the height of "Plan Colombia" in the 2000s, there were never more than 563 US troops in Colombia. Congress mandated a cap of 600 (which may have been exceeded off-the-books for search-and-rescue missions). So 600 troops is a *lot*.

Interesting update to a fascinating backstory with geopolitical implications washingtonpost.com/world/202…
Resources Minister Madeleine King leaves the door (slightly) ajar when asked if the federal government might nationalise Northern Minerals, as China-linked investors continue to defy govt orders to divest from it: "it's one option, but I wouldn’t want to advance on any decision"

We at @OCCRP called, emailed and messaged many times but Lloyds did not respond to our requests for comment. Almost two months later, this is what the company told the NYT

Billions of dollars’ worth of contracts predicting oil would fall and the S&P 500 would rise were placed about 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a post on Truth Social. CFTC staff began to investigate-- then were told to lay off. bloomberg.com/news/features/…

Breaking news that Andy Burnham oversaw a £55m taxpayer loan linked to Man City’s owners. He’s clearly compromised and must come clean on all his financial links to the club’s owners. English football fans deserve so much better than this sorry mess. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

The FlyDubai co-pilot who stabbed his captain and sent Flight 1073 diving toward the ground had previously been banned from flying by Oman over concerns he had adopted radical ideological views, but was hired irregardless of that. wsj.com/world/middle-east/fl…

This “tick tock” about the FlyDubai nightmare is a great piece of journalism—deeply reported, detailed, harrowing. Shows what can be done when you have time and resources and don’t expect the full story five minutes after it happens. nytimes.com/2026/10/02/world…

people have said it before but the whole shortform video / youtube / podcast content industry is so extractive of actual newsroom labor, and as far as I can tell very few of those studios have hard news operations, reporters / checkers / researchers...

So OpenAI's VP of global policy Ann O’Leary was *in Canberra* meeting Aus officials + attending @ASPI_org conference four days ***after*** the company sent a perfunctory email notifying Australia of the breach and -apparently- didn't alert anyone? Did she know about the activity?

Exclusive: In late 2024, FBI agents were looking at Sen. Susan Collins’ role in a massive illegal bribery scheme alleged by a former federal contractor. Then Trump gutted the FBI and DOJ, leaving no one to carry on the investigation – it’s dead. 🧵
