The Border Management Authority (BMA) has intercepted what is likely the largest drug consignment in South African history, seizing methaqualone valued at nearly R1 billion at the Beitbridge border post. In an intelligence-driven operation coordinated through the National Targeting Centre, officials identified a truck travelling from Zimbabwe and were waiting when it arrived. Using the site’s truck scanner, they discovered a hidden compartment and spent over eight hours dismantling the vehicle. Inside, authorities found 713,000 grams of methaqualone, also known as ABBA and commonly used to manufacture mandrax. The substance was confirmed with assistance from the Hawks and K9 units. The haul has an estimated street value of R998.2 million. Three Malawian suspects were arrested at the scene and taken to Musina Police Station, where the Hawks will continue investigations. The BMA said the operation demonstrates how intelligence-led investigations, digital scanning technology, and inter-agency coordination are rebuilding the rule of law at South Africa’s borders.
